1.Introduction
Health professionals provide help and support to promote children’s health and development, and many work with vulnerable children and families who experience problems in looking after their children.
It is essential that all staff have support and supervision when working with these families. Powys(t) Safeguarding Children’s Team are committed to providing support and child protection clinical supervision to staff, and therefore it is essential that information is shared between practitioners and the Safeguarding team.
This policy provides guidance to staff attending the Child Protection and Children in need meetings, so that this information can be shared.
It should be read in conjunction with
All Wales Child Protection Procedures
Safeguarding Children: Working Together Under the Children Act 2004
Powys LHB Report writing policy
Powys LHB Child Protection Training Strategy
Powys LHB Child Protection Clinical Supervision Policy
2.Scope
This policy is for all health staff working for Powys LHB who come into contact with children, young people and their families.
3.Training
All Powys LHB Staff should attend the mandatory training for child protection. Guidance is given in the Powys LHB Child Protection Training strategy. It is the responsibility of all staff and their managers to ensure that they access training appropriate to their role
The All Wales Child Protection Procedures will be available to all professionals involved in the care of children and their families. It is the responsibility of each employee and their manager to ensure access to the All Wales Child Protection procedures
4.Attendance at Child Protection Case Conference
4.1All health professionals invited to a Case Conference will be expected to attend and/or provide a report.
4.2On receipt of the invitation for the Case Conference the professional should inform the Safeguarding Children’s team administrator and the Specialist Nurse Safeguarding Children of the Conference and whether he/she is able to attend. Arrangements will then be made for pre and post conference child protection clinical supervision (if required)
4.3All health professionals invited to attend a child protection conference should submit a written report, whether or not they are able to attend. Case conference reports should be typed where possible and should be forwarded to the Chair of the Child Protection Case Conference, and the Specialist Nurse Safeguarding Children - 48 hours before the conference.
4.4The report should be shared with families at least the day before the conference. If staff have any concerns regarding the sharing of certain information with the family, then they should discuss this with the Specialist Nurse Safeguarding Children.
4.5Agency representatives must come to the conference prepared to present their report and summarise the important points. (see Powys LHB report writing policy)
4.6Where possible, the Specialist Nurse Safeguarding Children will attend the Case Conference to provide support for health staff.
4.7If a member of the Safeguarding Children team is unable to attend the case conference, feedback regarding the details of the case conference should be documented on a Multi disciplinary Meeting Report Form (SEE Appendix A)and sent to the Safeguarding Children’s Team within 5 working days.
