Child Development Centre

In general referrals that meet the service criteria are accepted for the following groups of children and young people:

  1. Children and Young People aged 0-18 years.
  2. Children and Young People registered with a GP in the following PHNT areas (Plymouth City, West Devon and parts of South Devon).
  3. Referrals accepted from GPs or via internal consultant to consultant transfer of care.

Referral Criteria

Developmental Delay (Pre-School Children)

Children who demonstrate delay that does not follow a pattern alongside their peers in 2 or more of the following domains:

Locomotor

Manipulative

Visual

Hearing

Speech and Language

Self care

Referrals should be supported by an Ages and Stages questionnaire and and must include a Health Visitor letter describing their observations and concerns. Also to include any relevant multiagency information.

Developmental Delay (School Age Children)

Same as above but should include, if available, information from school (report or supporting letter)

Request for assessment for children with behavioural issues are only appropriate if there is also clear evidence of a developmental disorder.

ADHD

Children aged 6 or over who demonstrate difficulties with attention, concentration, impulse control or hyperactivity in more than one setting. Request for assessment should be accompanied by supporting evidence from school.

Autistic Spectrum Disorder (Pre-School Children)

Children where concerns identify social interaction and/or communication difficulties. Concerns may be raised by parents and/or pre-school settings and should be supported by an Ages and Stages Questionnaire and must include a Health Visitor letter describing their observations and concerns. Also to include any relevant multiagency information.

Autistic Spectrum Disorder (School Age Children)

Children where concerns identify social interaction and/or communication difficulties. Referrals should be supported by a report from school SENCO and/or Educational Psychologist.

Please note this service is available for children registered with a Plymouth GP only. A Devon assessment service is available via Lescaze Offices, Dartington. ICS single point of access.

Where an ASD or ADHD assessment is requested and the child meets access criteria for CAMHS this assessment will be carried out by CAMHS.

Exclusions

Education – CDC clinicians provide medical advice for SEN pupils as requested by the Local Authority. There is no GP referral route to this service.

Adoption and Fostering/Looked After Children - CDC clinicians provide medical advice to the Local Authority. There is no GP referral route to this service.

Please note the following:

  • Referrals for acute conditions should be directed to Paediatricians at Derriford Hospital
  • Community Paediatrics do not provide assessment for dyslexia.
  • Where an ASD or ADHD assessment is being requested and the child also meets access criteria for the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service the ASD/ADHD assessment will be carried out by the CAMHS service.

Patients cannot be open to CDC and CAMHS for the same/similar condition. If patient is open to a service please forward to that service for review.
