1.0.  Introduction

This in-use data collection plan represents the UK’s plans for contributions to the WLPT drive cycle development. The UK Department for Transport does not have any existing data suitable for use in WLTP; new data will be collected as outlined in this paper.

2.0.  Schedule

2.1.  Overview of data collection exercise

·  Data collection area: UK (exact geographical areas undecided)

·  Data collection period: 2010

·  Data collected road type: urban/rural/motorway

·  Test vehicles: 12 vehicles (light duty commercial vehicles)

·  Collected data: Time, Vehicle speed, Engine speed, engine load, bake signal, engine coolant temperature, vehicle position (GPS).

2.2.  Vehicle selection

Twelve light duty commercial vehicles will be used to collect data. We have not yet decided which vehicles will be monitored, but these vehicles will represent the UK market mix of light duty commercial vehicles.

2.3.  Test location and route selection

Data will be collected for vehicles being used on non-prescribed routes across the UK.

2.4.  Driving conditions

2.4.1.  Driving behaviour

Drivers will not be given any special instructions.

2.4.2.  Driver selection

Both male and female drivers will be used; a range of driver ages will be covered.

2.4.3.  Road type

UK road definitions are defined by the population density of the surrounding area. These definitions are used when collecting statistical data on vehicle driving patterns.

Road type definitions

Urban / Rural / Motorway
Definition / Major and minor roads within an urban area with a population of 10,000 or more.1 The definition is based on the 1991 ODPM (DTLR) definition of Urban Settlements. / All other roads, i.e. those outside areas with a population of 10,000 or more that are not classified as motorway. / Major roads often used for long distance travel. They are usually three or more lanes in each direction and generally have the maximum speed limit of 70mph.

1 Population is measured using the UK population census

2.4.4.  Driving period

UK driving periods are defined as:

·  Peak — 07:00 to 10:00 and 16:00 to 19:00

·  Off-peak — all other times during weekdays

·  Weekend — Saturday and Sunday (all day)

2.4.5.  Season/weather conditions

Data will be collected during all weather conditions; any data collected during adverse weather conditions will be flagged so that these data points can be removed from analysis, if required.

2.4.6.  Time of data collection

Data collection will be executed on each test vehicle during the following period:

Weekday On-peak / Weekday Off-peak / Weekend
Urban / X / X / X
Rural / X / X / X
Motorway / X / X / X

2.5.  Amount of data to be collected

We will aim to collect 1000km of data per vehicle (spread across the possible combinations of road type/driving period).

2.6.  Measurements

For each vehicle the following information will be recorded:

·  Vehicle category (Category N1, Class I, II or III)

·  Vehicle Excise Duty tax class/band

·  Make

·  Model

·  Model variant (if applicable)

·  Engine type (diesel, LPG, hybrid etc.)

·  Engine displacement (litres)

·  Aspiration (natural/turbocharged)

·  Fuel system type (if available)(e.g. common rail direct injection)

·  Curb mass (kg)

·  Gross vehicle weight (kg)

·  Transmission type (manual/automatic)

·  Number of (forward gears)

·  Maximum rated power (kW)

·  Maximum rated speed

·  Maximum torque (Nm)

·  Drive system (front-wheel, rear-wheel or all-wheel drive)

·  Year/date first registered

·  Euro emission standard (Euro 4/5/6)

·  Gear-shift indicator (GSI) fitted (yes/no)

·  Adaptive speed limit indicator fitted (yes/no)

·  Speed limiter fitted (yes/no – if yes, limited speed km/h)

·  Air conditioning fitted (yes/no)

Each vehicle will be fitted with a portable activity monitoring system and GPS to record the following parameters:

·  Date — from GPS

·  Time — from GPS (this will recorded in UMT (Universal Mean Time = Greenwich Mean Time), but will be post-processed into local time as appropriate)

·  Vehicle speed — direct from the vehicle’s ECU (CAN) and also from GPS

·  Engine speed — direct from the vehicle’s ECU (CAN)

·  Engine load — direct from the vehicle’s ECU (CAN) (where available)

·  Brake signal — direct from the vehicle’s ECU (CAN)

·  Engine water temperature — direct from the vehicle’s ECU (CAN)

·  Vehicle position — from GPS

·  GSI (if fitted) — direct from the vehicle’s ECU (CAN)

In addition to the above, it will also be possible to derive:

·  Vehicle acceleration – from the vehicle’s speed

·  Road gradient – from GPS (though it should be noted that there are larger errors associated with GPS derived latitude than with position)

Logging rates of up to 10 Hz can be used for the GPS derived data. The CAN data frequency will be dependent on the CAN system, though is likely to be at least 1 Hz.

3.0.  Statistical information

We have robust data collected via census (method 1) for all road types. These data were taken from automatic traffic counters located in various regions across Great Britain (no data were taken from Northern Ireland).

The statistical data are summarised on the following page.
