With spring just around the corner, it’s never too early to start thinking about summer fun!

The Midwest Alliance is eager to share new and exciting internships, camps, and enrichment activities that are on the horizon. If you, or someone you know, could benefit from paid, interesting, and fun experiences, please read on! It’s never too soon to act, current recruitment and application deadlines are quickly approaching!
For High School Students:
The People Program. Three to six week, all-expenses-paid residential week summer program at the University of Wisconsin-Madison for students with a 2.75 GPA or higher in either 6th (enrolled in the Madison Metropolitan School District or the Menominee Indian School District) or 9th grade (enrolled in the Madison, Milwaukee, Racine, and Waukesha public school districts, and the Ho–Chunk, Menominee, and Lac Courte Oreilles, Lac du Flambeau and Bad River Nations Indian Nations). The Summer Science Institute at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Seven week residential experience in which students gain an understanding of biological/physical research while learning about college life. There is no cost to SSI participants. Room, board, books and materials are provided by the program. Deadline: April 2011
Milwaukee School of Engineering Summer Programs. Five-day residential summer camps in a variety of engineering fields for high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors. There is a cost, but there are scholarships available as well as funding from the Midwest Alliance. This program costs $700, but scholarships are available. Deadline:May 01, 2011
Research Apprentice Program I (RAP-I). Two to six week, all expenses-paid residential summer program (plus possible stipend) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign for current high school freshmen and sophomores. Deadline:March 15, 2011
Exploring Your Options (EYO). A one-week residential camp for high school juniors and seniors interested in engineering held in June and July of 2011. This camp costs $700. Deadline:April 15, 2011
IAI: Program. The Illinois Aerospace Institute summer camp is a one-week residential program for students entering grades 9-12 who are interested in learning about the fields of aerospace engineering and aviation. The Institute is held on the campus of the University of Illinois At Urbana-Champaign. Students stay at in a University Residence Hall with live-in camp counselors.Students will learn about a variety of topics regarding aerospace engineering through classroom sessions, laboratories, demonstrations, and hands-on activities. This camp costs $700. Deadline:April 15, 2011
Young Scholars Program. This is a summer and academic year program for incoming freshman to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. There is no cost, and benefits include tuition and books paid for up to 9 credit hours and competitive performance-based scholarships. Deadline: Spring 2011
For Students of All Ages:
WisconsinCenter for Academically Talented Youth: University of Wisconsin-Madison based programs for academically talented youth of a variety of ages. Dates Vary. Visit for more information. Deadline for summer programs is May 15, 2011.
Teen Work-Study Opportunities: Shedd Aquarium, Chicago, Illinois. Date: Varies. Shedd is looking for bright, friendly and motivated teens for our work-study program, either in the summer or on weekends during the school year. Three categories are available to students: gardening (Green Gardeners); guest experience (Shedd Ambassadors); and interpretation (Young Naturalists). Applicants should possess or want to develop strong communication skills and a connection to Shedd’s collection and mission, and have the desire to work in a team environment interacting with the public. Participants must be 15 or older and currently enrolled in high school. Work permits are required for 15-year-olds. Applications are being accepted now for summer 2011. Read more:

2011 Future Problem Solving International Conference:La Crosse, Wisconsin.June 9-13, 2011. A conference for high school and college students – registration is required.
World Affairs Seminar for High School Students: This summer global education program brings together hundreds of high school students from around the world.CarrollUniversity, Waukesha, Wisconsin. June 18- June 24, 2011.
NIU STEM Career Investigations : Campers having completed grades 9-12. Northern IllinoisUniversity, DeKalb, Illinois. June 19- June 24, 2011. High school campers choose two areas of science or engineering to investigate on a deeper level, using the laboratories on NIU’s DeKalb Campus. Choices include topics from electronics, chemistry, biology, renewable energy, or robotics. Additional time will be spent meeting scientists and engineers and learning about the myriad career opportunities in the STEM fields. Residential campers $515 ($545 after June 1, 2011); returning LA&S Academic Summer campers, multiple campers from the same household, or NIU employees are eligible for an additional $25 discount on request.
