Florida has a rich and diverse prehistoric archaeological heritage. Native peoples have lived here for more than 12,000 years. The state contains over 35,000 known sites that document many aspects of the native peoples’ way of life. Some remains are fingernail-sized chips of stone from a spear point and others include extensive mounds of shell, broken artifacts and living debris. The Crystal River site, a National Historic Landmark, is Citrus County’s most famous archaeological resource. Preservation of this and other sites is key to protecting Florida’s rich archaeological heritage.

The Crystal River Site in Citrus County,Florida is the subject of the Polk State College Archaeology Club lecture on Saturday, June 9, 2012. The meeting will be held at 10:00 AMin Room 215 in the Learning Resources Buildingon the Winter Haven Campus. Our speaker, Dr. Rich Estabrook, with over 30 years of field experience, earned hisdoctorate from the University of South Florida and serves as the Regional Director of the Central Regional Center of the Florida Public Archaeology Network.

The lecture is open to the public with no charge for admission. PSC sponsor, Kathleen Riley (863-299-8430), invites everyone to attend.

Park either on the north side of the PSC campus between the WSC (Science) Building and the WST (Student Center) Building or on the south side between the WAD (Administration) Building and the WFA (Fine Arts) Building. Walk toward the center of the campus, to the northeast corner of the WLR (Learning Resources) Building. It is the only three-story building on campus. Both the elevator and the stairwell are located on the inner north side of this building. Go to the second floor, pass through the double glass doors in front of you and go straight ahead. You will see a large sign for the Teaching, Learning and Computer Center (TLCC) in front of you, but the entrance will be to your right. As soon as you enter the TLCC as you face the reception desk, you will see a large sign at the top of the far wall in front of you for the Foreign Language Acquisition Center. The classroom beneath this sign is WLR 215. Our life-size cutout of Indiana Jones will be guarding the entrance to the room!
