Dear Colleague

Wiltshire Cricket Chance to Shine 2013 – Creating the Future

Wiltshire Cricket islaunching the 2013 “Chance to Shine” programme by contacting every cricket club in Wiltshire with a youth section with this invitation:

“Can you help promote cricket by working with primary schools near to you and help them to deliver school based competition?”

Would your club like to be involved?

For the past six years, Wiltshire Cricket and Chance to Shine (C2S) have been working together to deliver “free” cricket coaching in schools across the county. During this period, club coaches have been delivering curriculum, extra curriculum and club based activity to over 4000 children each year. In the past, these numbers have been the major factor in fulfilling C2S’s aims of spreading the message of cricket development.

However this mass participation has not seen an increase in the number of cricket matches played within and between local schools. Therefore, with match play becoming a Key Performance Indicator (KPI) for Chance to Shine, Wiltshire Cricket have made the decision to change the emphasis of its own C2S programme to address this problem and to help increase match play participation.

The feedback from schools has indicated that shorter programmes are better for them and their children and that there needs to be a purpose for being involved. Therefore with these points in mind, Wiltshire Cricket has created a coaching package that can be delivered by club coaches to meet the needs of the clubs and the schools alike.

Historically competitions are most effective when they are the focal point of the coaching. Therefore the plan for all the 2013 projects is to organise a competition day at your club and deliver the coaching leading up to that day to best prepare the schools to compete.

C2S Competition Based Framework

Each project will be expected to deliver a number of KPI outcomes; including an inter school competition (a club based school festival), intra school competitions, club promotion through school assemblies, teacher training and helping to deliver a Chance to Shine Promotional event – National Cricket Day.

While these five things may seem quite difficult to achieve, Wiltshire Cricket will help any interested club by providing funding for the following:

  • 6 one hour curriculum coaching sessions per school
  • 6 one hour extra curriculum coaching sessions per school
  • 6 half hour lunchtime matches per school
  • 6 hours to deliver a club based competition day (two coaches x three hours)
  • half an hour per school to deliver an assembly
  • half an hour per school to deliver a teacher training session
  • 3 hours per school to deliver a National Cricket Day event

To help each club develop their own youth section, we will also fund six hours of coaching time to enable the project to run six weeks of an after school club at your own ground at a time of your choosing.

The overall size of your programme will depend on the number of schools that you wish to include, (minimum two) however to enable us to deliver between ten and fifteen projects, each individual project may include no more than six schools in total. Note though that the school programmes could be delivered at different times during the school term, i.e:

  • Three schools during February and March
  • Three schools during April and May
Note we would not advise the delivery of curriculum coaching programmes during June or July as these would be the times best suited to delivering the competition element

Planning and Preparation

In completing your planning to apply for Chance to Shine funding, you need to follow this simple plan:

  1. Who is going to deliver your Chance to Shine coaching and when they are available? All Chance to Shine coaches must be: UKCC2 qualified coaches or higher (at the time of submitting your application), a current ECBCA member, hold a current ECB CRB, First Aid qualification and SportsCoachUK Safeguarding Children qualification
  2. Decide upon your club competition date (and perhaps have a reserve date too)
  3. Approach your schools to invite them to the completion
Explain that they will receive for free six one hour curriculum coaching sessions and six one hour extra curriculum sessions (if they want them)!
Note - you may choose to deliver more than six one hour curriculum sessions, however C2S will only be able to fund the initial six sessions.
  4. Timetable an assembly with each school to promote the competition and your club
  5. Timetable an after school staff meeting with each school to introduce the sport to the teachers
  6. Discuss running a free lunchtime competition within the school
  7. Talk to the school about National Cricket Day.
Make the school aware that you will be coming into the school to deliver this.
  8. Think about when you would like to run your club based sessions.
You may decide to charge a nominal fee for this to anyone who attends (50p?) any additional funding you raise can be spent however you wish (kit purchased, additional coach funded, etc.)

If you follow this check list, you will achieve everything that is expected of you in the planning phase. To ensure that your project is ready to start in February or April, these points may need to be confirmed before the schools break up for Christmas.

Funding

At present, all hours worked will be paid at £17 an hour up the maximums stated:

  • Curriculum coaching - six hours per school
  • Extra curriculum – six hours per school
  • Lunchtime (intra school matches) – six 30 minute sessions per school
  • Inter school matches/festivals – six hours in total (or 2 coaches for three hours each)
  • National Cricket Day – three hours per school
  • Teacher After School meetings – 30 minutes per school
  • School assemblies – 30 minutes per school
  • Club based activity – six hours per project

All coaches will be paid via the Wiltshire Cricket payroll, therefore the £17 per hour rate will be before deductions that may be necessary for PAYE and National Insurance. There will be no mileage budget for the programme.

Training/Mentoring

We do not expect coaches to be ready to deliver all of the elements of this programme immediately. Prior to starting the programme, Wiltshire Cricket will run a free “Working in Schools” workshop that all coaches will be expected to attend. There will also be a mentoring programme whereby we will help and train you to deliver school assemblies and staff training sessions.

Initially you may want Wiltshire Cricket to deliver the first assembly and staff training sessions for you as you learn how to deliver them. Wiltshire Cricket will be aiming to deliver a fuller, more comprehensive mentoring programme that they have been able to do so in the past.

Reward and Recognition

Clubs should note that there is a small amount of administration that is required in entering timetables onto the C2S database. There will be no direct funding for this in the 2013 programme, however all clubs achieving the minimum targets for the following KPIs will receive a bonus payment of £250:

  • Intra school matches – minimum of 6 played per school
  • Inter school matches – minimum of 1 festival, totaling six matches played
  • Assemblies – delivered to ½ of the schools in the project
  • Staff meeting sessions – delivered to ½ of the schools in the project
  • National Cricket Day – delivered at ¾ of the schools in the project

In addition, Wiltshire Cricket will fund a Reward and Recognition day at Gloucestershire CCC for each of the club project managers.

Summary

However in the meantime, please can I ask you to take some time to consider your coach availability and which schools you will want to work with. Wiltshire Cricket has produced a simple data collection sheet to be used by clubs to help manage the initial organisational element of the programme. We would ask that you complete the document and forward it to us as soon as possible to enable us to begin our own budgeting process.

If you have any queries or questions what so ever regarding “Chance to Shine”, please let me know as soon as possible.

I look forward to hearing from you soon. Please respond by Friday 21st December 2012 at the latest

Yours faithfully
