Carter:

  • Bryn Card has fostered solidarity with his program, providing a better community program and hoping to have more kids from Wilsonville in his program.
  • Concerns about lost players, groups going on their own, and club players and teams.
  • Our job to hear opinions and different voices and make the best decision for the kids in our community
  • Intro (Larson) 5 mins

Larson:

  • Card took 13 8th graders last year on his futures team
  • Provided an understanding of the layout of the league
  • Discussion (All) 15 mins

Card:

  • Extremely positive for 6-7 kids
  • Looking for ways to improve and provide a smooth transition for kids going into high school baseball
  • Ideas: Create a 13U and 14 U team that would play 3-4 pre-season tourneys, play 2 weekends (that would need to be held out) for teams to play and end the regular season a little earlier so 8th graders can start on the summer season
  • Tryouts would occur for the summer season so kids can play either with the high school kids or on Junior all-star teams-based on tryouts

Carter: How many people are voicing this concern?

  • Answer-Card two (Tacla and MacDonald)

Restate: tourneys prior to teams starting, during the LL season they would be fully committed to LL in word and action, open two weekends for team tourneys, LL rules take precedence for safety reasons, 8th graders have a tryout for Summer Legion program and kids that don’t make that can play Junior All-Stars.

These are conversations that have been had with Kevin Larson to some degree.

Sam Sumner: Who is making the teams?

  • Answer- Card- has to be a tryout
  • Carter: LL does not allow for select teams-strict guidelines, can’t use LL gear, use the name, uniforms, not LL sanctioned

John Santiago: What is the proposal?

  • Answer-Carter- there isn’t one yet, this is an idea for now, someone would have to make a formal proposal for us to act.

Card: Need to end regular season at appropriate time

Carter: District 4 makes schedule so we can request

  • Can’t have private team
  • Goal is to provide baseball for the community and also to provide skilled players at the high school level
  • From time player commits to LL they are in LL for the season
  • Sign Waiver to commit to program
  • Holding out a couple weekends could be ok
  • All-star selection for kids that don’t play Legion with Card

Santiago: Agrees with having a tryout, concerns about not buying into LL-words and actions not matching-can’t have that.

  • Jeremy Doblie: Likely these kids/families don’t really want to play LL

Kate Gillett: How many of these concerns are LL specific vs an issue of no base of coaches and volunteers at the level in question? Is it good to make a blanket decision for years to come based upon one year when not enough time has passed to make a judgement? We have an 8th grade gap this year.

  • Card-Answer- Want to stay LL but we need to keep up and that is playing games-right now we need to catch up.
  • Base of LL kids is coming in a couple years

Russ Wright-clarifying that the issue with the 7th graders is different. There are parents in the community that want to take that group of kids and go JBO.

Larson: Coaching issue is a constant.

Joe Turco: What are success measures? What are we going to put in place to meet the needs of these kids/parents to know we have succeeded?

Dan Haener: After a couple more tough years it should get easier

  • Closing (Larson) 5 mins
