POLICY & GUIDANCE FOR MEMBERS

MEMBERSHIP INFORMATION

  1. INTRODUCTION

Membership currently costs just £3.95 per month. Don’t forget that if you leave your job or retire, you can still retain your CSSC membership. Details can be found here

Membership cards are issued annually in January to a member’s home address. If you do not receive one it means Head Office (HO) do not have up to date details for you. This can easily be rectified by phoning the membership Section at HO on the following number 01494 888444

  1. PUBLIC SECTOR MEMBERSHIP

Any person working in the public sector is eligible to join, no longer just Civil Servants / legacy BT & PO staff. This is due to a change in how CSSC is funded and subsequent change in the rules. As a result, this includes all NHS, local authority and County Council staff including nurses, doctors, hospital workers & GP surgeries, police, fire brigade, teachers and those who work in schools, etc. So who do you know out there that’s now able to join us?!

  1. LINKED MEMBERSHIP

Direct members (i.e. members, or retired members, of a “qualifying” public sector organisation) are now called Qualifying Members (QMs)) and can recruit up to 3 Linked Members (LMs) who are age 18 or over. These can be family, friends, and colleagues, anyone in fact! QM’s pay their own subs and the LMs pay their own subs by monthly, quarterly, or annual direct debit. For members wanting to bring their children (under 18) on Exeter & Torbay Area events and trips, they can do so at the subsidised member rate.

  1. “MEMBER GET MEMBER” SCHEME

To help and encourage volunteers to recruit new members, CSSC nationally will givea £10 My Savings + credit for each person a member recruits. There is no limit on how many people you can recruit. Recruit 10 members and you can earn yourself £100 to spend on any vouchers, etc that you want!

  1. GYM & SPORTS CENTRE MEMBERSHIP DISCOUNTS

Goldenstones Yeovil & Wincanton Sports Centre are now run for SSDC by the company LED Leisure who have recently agreed to give CSSC members a 10% discount on their “Unlimited” package (currently £34 per month – so saving £3.40 per month). The same offer applies to their “Aqua” package (see their website for more info – – currently £24 per month – so £2.40 less for CSSC members. They also manage all of East Devon District Council leisure facilities in Axminster, Colyton, Honiton, Broadclyst, Seaton, Sidmouth, Ottery St Mary & Exmouth. To take advantage of this offer, members need to apply to join in the normal way, filling in a form and producing a CSSC membership card as evidence (LED will usually take a copy of it). It also might be prudent to take a copy of this document or of any newsletter in which this offer is advertised in case staff are unaware of the new arrangement. Once a member, it is possible to use any of the facilities run by LED.

Expressions has discounted membership fees via My Savings+

They have the following facilities:Clifton Hill Sports Centre, Riverside Leisure Centre,

Exeter Arena, Wonford Sports Centre, Pyramids Leisure Centre, Isca Centre, Northbrook Swimming Pool, Northbrook Approach Golf Course and Torbay Leisure Centre.

Check out the My Savings+ page in your new CSSC offers booklet (issued with your new Jan 18 membership card). Having arranged the above discounts locally, it seems that all you have to do now is to follow the links in the booklet and you can print yourself out a voucher for a gym, etc, local to you that will give you 10% discount off of the normal membership costs.

15.EVENT ORGANISER INCENTIVE

There is alittle incentive for all volunteers who organise events for the Exeter & Torbay CSSC Area Association (AA). People have to work hard to ensure that events are well co-ordinated and run smoothly on the day. It all takes planning and use of their time and effort. In order to keep organisers and to encourage new ones, the Committee agreed that the Organiser goes free up to a max of £30. This is at the discretion of the Committee and does not include Regular Items.

  1. NATIONAL MEMBERSHIP PRIVILEGES
Don't forget to check out the huge range of membership privileges now available to CSSC members across the UK. Details are on the CSSC Website at

For the Exeter & Torbay spotlight, please see the CSSC website and the Southwest information area /Exeter & Torbay information or use the link -

17.NATIONAL TRAVEL POLICY (NTP)

A National Travel Policy (NTP) is about to come in that supersedes the various Regional Common Subsidy Policies around the UK, though travel and subsistence payments will be made as before (i.e. by the Areas in the SW) and we will then be reimbursed by Head Office (HO) for those attending Regional competitions as well as national events not covered by HO direct. The main change is that Taster Days are no longer included as you can travel to anywhere in the country to take part. Each of the national events is categorised so not every national event is covered by this system (i.e. Pudding Club, Hillwalking, etc). No travel expenses can be claimed for these from any other source either as the subsidy is at source. When the policy is issued shortly, it will be available on the CSSC website and we will let our members know in our newsletter. In addition, the Exeter & Torbay Area will often specify that NTP rate is claimable for a mid distance Area event rather than lay on a coach or minibus (i.e. events at Poole). The rate is the same and in all cases, currently payable by the Exeter & Torbay Area – just submit a claim within three months to your rep or the Area Treasurer. The agreed rate is half the highest volunteer mileage rate. That means the current NTP rate is 10p per mile (as of April 2016). For up to date information please visit

  1. LEISURESCENE
Leisurescene Magazine is issued as a Link in an e-mail to all members. If you do not currently receive this, it’s because HO do not have an up to date e-mail address for you – please let them have this information as soon as possible. If CSSC hold an address for you but no e-mail address, then you’ll receive a copy in the post. If you do not receive anything, it’s probably because HO records do not have any contact details for you, so it’s important you let them have the details ASAP.
  1. INSURANCE
CSSC Public Liability Policy Insurance cover. The policy provides cover against legal liability for death, injury or illness to any person and damage to material property of any third party happening in connection with CSSC activities (the business) and occurring during the period of the policy.
