Name of Scholarship: Willis and Vada Hoskinson Scholarship

Established through a Testamentary Gift set forth in the Will of Vada Hoskinson

Willis and Vada Hoskinson were lifetime Turon area residents. She earned a degree from SterlingCollege and was an elementary school teacher. He attended the University of Kansas and was a longtime employee and officer at the Turon State Bank. In 1925, prior to her marriage, Vada was selected the first Miss Kansas Wheat Girl. Because of this honor, she traveled throughout Kansas and the United States, promoting Kansas wheat. This scholarship fund was to, in part, thank the residents of Turon and the surrounding area for their support of Vada as the Kansas Wheat Girl. In addition, it was Mr. And Mrs. Hoskinson’s desire to promote post-secondary education among the young people of the Turon area.

Scholarship Requirements

  1. Must be a resident of Reno, Pratt or Stafford counties, and reside within a fifteen (15) mile radius of the city of Turon, Kansas.
  2. Must be planning to attend or is attending a college, university or community college located in the state of Kansas.
  3. Must have at least a B average in high school and college.
  4. Must demonstrate a dedication to community service.
  5. Special consideration will be given to those students pursuing degrees in

Education, Business or Agriculture.

  1. This scholarship is for one school term. The scholarship grant will be paid in

two installments, one-half (1/2) of the scholarship grant to be paid to the educational institution at the beginning of the Fall Term and one-half (1/2) to be paid to the educational institution at the beginning of the Spring Term, contingent upon the recipient’s enrollment in a post secondary program. Recipients of the one year scholarship are encouraged to submit applications for the next school year, as long as such applicant otherwise meets qualifications for the scholarship.

Selection Committee

Selection Committee will be a three-person panel made up of the following: one member from the Executive Board of the South Central Community Foundation; one member shall be a teacher from the Unified School District #310 or its successor appointed by the School Board for such school districts; and one member shall be the President, or his or her Designee, from the Citizens State Bank of Kansas, Turon, Kansas or its successor.

About Willis and Vada Hoskinson

Willis and Vada Hoskinson were lifetime Turon area residents. Vada graduated from SterlingCollege and was an elementary school teacher. Willis attended the University of Kansas and was a longtime employee and officer at the Turon State Bank. Prior to their marriage, Vada Watson was selected as the first Miss Kansas Wheat Girl in 1925. The contest was sponsored by the KansasStateAgriculturalCollege to promote wheat. The young Vada traveled to Washington, D.C. and presented President Calvin Coolidge with a small bag of wheat from Kansas, marked “Kansas Grows the Best Wheat in the World.” Because of this honor, she traveled throughout Kansas and the United States promoting Kansas wheat.

The purpose for establishing this scholarship fund was to, in part, thank the residents of Turon and the surrounding area for all of their support of Vada as the Kansas Wheat Girl. In addition, it was Mr. And Mrs. Hoskinson’s desire to promote post-secondary education among the young people of the Turon area.
