Description of Course

Automotive Technology is the training program for development of knowledge and skills needed to inspect, diagnose, repair and adjust automotive vehicles. Experiences in a well-equipped shop and in the classroom help students understand the design, construction and operation of the automotive unit. Mechanical skills are developed in practical shop work.

Students are taught according to the guidelines set by the Department of Education, Trade and Industries Division and Automotive Service Excellence (ASE). The guidelines include a competency-based education task list with essential requirements for all students. The following is a (current) short summary of the essential curriculum requirements of all students:

  • Introduction/safety/shop operation
  • General electrical system diagnosis
  • Battery diagnosis and service
  • Starting system diagnosis and Repair
  • Charging system diagnosis and repair
  • Lighting system diagnosis and Repair
  • Gauges and Electrical Accessories
  • Ignition System Diagnosis and Repair
  • Fuel and exhaust system diagnosis and repair
  • Emission control system diagnosis and repair
  • General engine diagnosis
  • Lubrication and cooling system diagnosis and repair
  • Suspension and steering system diagnosis and repair
  • Tire and wheel diagnosis and repair
  • Hydraulic brake system and Anti-lock brake system (ABS) diagnosis and repair

Other areas of instruction are included in the curriculum as resources and time permit.

Length of Course

This is a two-year program requiring study at the NeffCenter for one-half of the school day.

Qualification and Preparation

Those entering the course should intend to become employed as an automotive technician, work in a related field or attend a college or university. A mechanical aptitude and basic reading and math skills are needed for success. Both male and female students find employment opportunities in the automotive field.

Employment Opportunities

There are vast opportunities in the automotive field nationally and in our community and surrounding counties. These opportunities include dealerships, independent service centers, lubricant specialists, auto parts stores, fleet maintenance, discount automotive service centers and others. According to department of Labor statistics, nationally, a skilled automotive technician can earn upwards of $70,000 dollars per year.
