Otherwise, transfer students are required to complete six (6) study hours per week.

Study Hour Reductions

No study hour reductions are available for:

  1. Participation in fraternity or sorority study groups - This time does not count toward Brophy Center study hour requirements. The Brophy Center Office, however, can provide documentation of study hours to present to your fraternity or sorority leader. A form for this purpose is available in the Brophy Center Office;
  2. Informal study groups or exam review sessions - You may, however, invite other students on a short-term basis to join you in the Brophy Center so that study group/exam review meetings can be counted toward your required study hours.

Limited study hour reductions (e.g., to 3 hours per week) are available for the following:

  1. Working more than 15 hrs. per week (on or off campus). Students must provide documentation of work schedules to the Director at ;
  2. Majors with “extra” academic requirements - outside of class - such as ROTC, Music, Theater, or Cinematography. To request a reduction, please send an e-mail copy of your course schedule, including the specific classes with extra requirements, pasted in the body of the e-mail to ;

Managing Your Required Study Hrs. Each Week:

1.If you encounter unforeseen circumstances & you are unable to fully complete your study hours in a given week, it is your responsibility to contact the Director no later than 12 noon on Wednesday to provide an explanation of your individual circumstances. You may e-mail this information to ;

2.In the case of illness, you must present the Director with a copy of an official excuse as you would a professor for one of your classes;

3.Documentation of “official” University activities, such as out-of-town university trips, must be submitted in advance to the Director;

4.Any request for a temporary study hour reduction in a specific week must be submitted by 12 noon on Wednesday to the Director, either in writing at the Brophy Center Office or via e-mail. A reduction in required study hours is not “automatic.” Rather, each request is reviewed by the Director & decisions are made on a case-by-case basis. Typically, no reduction in study hours is available below 50% for a given week (except for extended illness).

Tutoring

Students are encouraged to fully utilize the tutoring services available at the AARC & through other resources on campus. The AARC documents tutoring time (in the AARC), & the individual student is responsible for providing this documentation to the Brophy Center Office in order to receive study hour credit. Handwritten notes from individual tutors may not be submitted for study hour credit. Students on academic probation are strongly encouraged to seek tutoring assistance for every class through both the AARC& the Brophy Center. The Brophy Center provides tutoring in selected courses. The AARC, however, is intended to be your principal source of tutoring support. Please inquire in the Brophy Center Office about the availability of limited tutoring for specific courses.

Warnings & Referrals

Failure to complete study hour requirements is considered a violation of the SFA Student Code of Conduct, on the same level as any other violation. Failure to meet study hours during any one week may result in a “warning letter.” This notification is sent to a student’s SFA e-mail. Failure to read the “warning letter” e-mail message does not exempt a student from the sanctions associated with non-completion of study hours.

E-mail is an official means of university communication. Penalties for failure to complete study hours (for any one week) may include additional requirements, e.g., a required meeting with the Director, or a required meeting with the Student Judicial Officer. An additional week of failure to meet study hour requirements (consecutive or non-consecutive) may result in a referral to the University Office of Student Rights & Responsibilities. One consequence of failure to comply with study hour requirements for two (2) or more weeks is that residents may have their academic records “blocked” until they return to full compliance with study hour requirements. In addition, residents who are “clocked out” - not physically present in the Brophy Center during a “room check” - may be referred to Dr. Peggy Scott, Office of Student Rights & Responsibilities at any time for falsifying an official record. Falsifying a record violates the SFA Student Code of Conduct. See this website for further information on the SFA Student Code of Conduct:

I understand & agree to abide by the policies of the Brophy Center. Furthermore, I fully understand that non-compliance with required study hours or falsifying an official record may result in further actions as detailed in this agreement form (“contract”).
