Doctoral Student: With Resit Unal Ph.D. (Chair), Charles Keating Ph.D., Ariel Pinto Ph.D., Trina Chytka Ph.D. (NASA Langley Research Center).

Dissertation Title: “Uncertainty Assessment in High-Risk Environment Using Probability, Evidence Theory and Expert Judgment Elicitation”. Dissertation research developed a combined probabilistic and evidence theory approach to assess uncertainty in conceptual space system design. Expert judgment elicitation,together with traditional probability theory and Dempster-Shafer evidence theory were utilized to expand the framework of uncertaintyin conceptual design and seeking to aid the decision maker in uncertainty assessment. The approach developed was applied to a thermal protection system design uncertainty quantification study for a Crew Exploration Vehicle study at NASALangleyResearchCenter.

Research Assistant for NASA Grant 151341, Assessing Uncertainty for Launch Vehicle Operations Analysis 2005-2006.

Description: Performed statistical analysis, conducted literature search and prepared reports. Worked with decision makers and senior members of NASA’s Langley Research Center-Vehicle Analysis Branch.

SEVA-PORT/Opportunity Inc.-Classroom Projects- Conceptual and Realistic Applications of Nautical Engineering – CRANE – July 2009 – Amount Awarded: $14, 975 - PI: Stella B. Bondi, Co-PI: Petros Katsioloudis, Co-PI: Cynthia Tomovic – Percent Involvement: 50%

Description:This project intended to develop Modeling and Simulation (M&S) experiences for K-12 public schools with focus on high school population. The project emphasized modeling and simulation of physical systems in the port environments in order to bring real world problems closer to students interested in pursuing STEM related careers. The PIs on the grant intend to work in close collaboration with Virginia Beach City Public Schools to create appropriate curriculum modules for intended high school audience and to identify existing courses where these modules can be integrated.

SEVA-PORT/Opportunity Inc.-Classroom Projects- Marine Systems Modeling and Simulation, (MS) 2: STEM Outreach Program for K-12 Students – July 2009 – Amount Awarded: $14, 800 - PI: Petros Katsioloudis, Co-PI: Stella B. Bondi, Co-PI: Cynthia Tomovic– Percent Involvement: 30%

Description: This project intended to develop STEM related camps for K-12 under representative student groups that could focus on seaport infrastructure related to ship building and port operation. The camps included field trips to local port and shipyards and opportunities to see firsthand operation of complex marine systems. In addition, marine engineers and operators from local port were invited to make presentation on various marine engineering topics. The project emphasized modeling and simulation of physical systems in the port environments in order to bring real world problems closer to students interested in pursuing STEM related careers.

DOE/NREL- SOLAR DECATHLON 2011: TEAM TIDEWATER –March 2010 – Amount Awarded: $100, 000by DOE; Anticipated $550,000 by Fund Raising – PI: Mujde Erten-Unal, Co-PI: Stella B. Bondi, Co-PI: Jae Yoon -Percent Involvement: 30%

Description: An international competition of universities to design-built zero-energy homes. Old Dominion University and Hampton University have taken as core missions the use of their research to help maintain and improve their port cities’ central cores. Students from each, who have joined together to propose competition in the 2011 Solar Decathlon as Team Tidewater, believe that livable cities are the key to a sustainable future. Solar Decathlon’s project plan is to proceed through partnerships with public agencies, a community development corporation, and a private sector contractor to facilitate the design and construction a full six unit model in Norfolk. A top floor unit, its share of required photovoltaic and solar water systems, and a portion of its adjacent core, will be fabricated with student and community labor under the direction of a private contractor for the Solar Decathlon competition in Washington DC. Even though this project is to be executed by students, faculty involved with the project must be able to guide, support and ensure that each component of the project is working. These components include: Fundraising, curriculum development and course integration, team development, schematic design (proposal and website), design development (design, building codes, drawing, model, virtual house tour and development of physical model), construction documentation (stamped drawings, project manual, health and safety plan), public exhibition materials, construction, testing/commissioning, transportation, assembly, contests and public exhibit, disassembly and project closeout.

CET 200 Engineering Statics
Introduction to the analysis of discrete and distributed force systems using scalar methods and free body diagrams and their application to bodies in external equilibrium, including friction, moment of inertia, and center of gravity.
CET 220 Strength of Materials
Introduction to the mechanical behavior of materials subjected to various external loads and the utilization of stress-strain relationships to design members subjected to shear, axial, bending, and torsional loads, and an introduction to deformations prediction and Mohr’s circle.

CET 301 Structural Analysis

Determination of forces, moments, and deflections in statically determinate and indeterminate beams, frames, and trusses due to various load cases and load combinations. Methods of analysis will include matrix stiffness analysis, moment distribution and other approximate and computer methods.

MET 305 Mechanics of Materials

Application of statics and strength of materials to mechanical engineering technology, including force systems, equilibrium, friction, and stress-strain relationships and applications to the mechanical behavior of materials.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

Project Engineer, Hoggard-Eure Associates, Portsmouth, Virginia June 2002 – December 2004.

Designed and prepared site plans for industrial, commercial and residential development for approval to various agencies and municipalities within Hampton Roads area.
Responsibilities included site grading drainage, storm water management, water and sewer connection, gravity/force main and pump station design and/or evaluation, calculations and selection of the best alternative. Coordinated activities with clients, contractors, attorneys, reviewing agencies and our in-house staff to achieve successful completion of projects. Assisted with contractor selection and construction activities.

Design Engineer, O'Brien & Gere Engineers, Inc. Virginia Beach, Virginia, January 2000 – June 2002

Designed and prepared final contract drawings and specifications for various civil engineering projects. Responsibilities included evaluation of sanitary sewer system to eliminate inflow/infiltration, prepared report and presented optimum solutions for the rehabilitation of defective sewers. Designed and layout of new gravity sewers. Evaluated capacity and prepared the design of several suction/lift pump stations and force main connections. Supervised and managed crew for subsurface investigations and construction activities. Participated in a program for the removal of volatile organic compounds from soil utilizing air-sparge system. Developed operation manuals and monthly monitoring procedures.

Staff Engineer, O'Brien & Gere Engineers, Inc. Virginia Beach, Virginia, December 1999 – January 2000

Prepared contract drawings for the soil and ground water remediation.
Preparation of a VPDES Storm Water Permit and required map following the guidelines of the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality. Participated in the field activities for the collection of storm water sampling. Additionally, discharge sources, discharge locations and receiving waters were identified, followed by computer generated mapping of storm water system. Developed landfill closure erosion/sedimentation control plans, proposed grading of sanitary landfill, including gas vent locations and details of diversion and drainage channels.

Design Drafter-Senior Design Drafter, O'Brien & Gere Engineers, Inc. Virginia Beach, Virginia, October 1989 – December 1999

Prepared and supervised drafting activities for various projects and disciplines with above average complexity, including site plans, sanitary sewer, electrical/mechanical and structural. Assisted in the development of QA/QC and ISO 9000 formalization of the drafting/design standards. Trained and instructed entry-level drafters on the tools available and the applicable standards for the production of quality work.

Drafting/Design Supervisor, TexCom Inc., Portsmouth, Virginia, July 1987 – October 1989

Drafting/Design supervision and management of all drafting support activities for various federal projects. Projects included site plans, preparation of mechanical electrical and electronic layouts. Prepared standards, performed QA/QC, assured deadlines and guidelines were met with above and beyond client's expectations, prepared work schedules and assignments based on level of expertise of the 6-10 draft persons assigned to the department.

Gaithersburg, Maryland, September 1982 – July 1987

Hiring/training and direct supervision of entry level drafts persons. The long term contract was in support of Naval Electronics Engineering Group Activity at Portsmouth, Virginia. Additional duties included scheduling of work, quality assurance, security clearance briefing/debriefing of employees, preparation of time sheets and coordination between client and headquarters.
