WILL JOB EVALUATION SOLVE IT?

CASE STUDIES –

If you were faced with these issues –do you think Job Evaluation is the right tool to solve them?

1Our salaries are falling behind others in the same area across all grades.

2We have grown in recent years from 10 to 40 staff mostly working in small differently funded projects. The rates of pay for different staff groups were decided independently and now seem out of kilter. For example advocates and advice workers are paid on different scales. We are also having difficulty recruiting staff to some posts.

3The finance director post is vacant and we don’t think the current salary is enough to recruit. Can we unilaterally change it to be more than the others in the Senior Management Team.

4If we are on the NJC scales do we have to evaluate each post according to their evaluation scheme?

5We can’t recruit any care staff- what’s a reasonable going rate?

6We put a particular salary scale in the funding bid and advertised at that level and didn’t recruit anyone. Can I change it?

7The managers in the information service are complaining that managers in the home care service are paid more than them and they don’t think this is fair.

JOB EVALUATION IS ONLY NECESSARY WHEN POSTS ARE PAID OUT OF KILTER TO EACH OTHER.

THE ONLY OUTCOME JOB EVALAUTION GIVES YOU IS A RELATIVE RANKING OF POSTS – It says nothing about pay or grades.

1Is the problem to do with relative ranking of posts?

-Yes = JE

-No = Salary Benchmarking

2Is the problem to do with not being able to recruit?

Check benchmarking against other local jobs

Check recruitment materials for quality

May mask a relative ranking problem in which case = JE

Might be looking at benchmarking the grade attached to one group of staff as they have slipped in relation to other grades which are fine.

3Is the problem to do with one post being perceived to be paid wrongly?

(Does this mask the tip of the iceberg?)

Is there a sensible grading structure in place or are their other posts dubiously graded?

If you think the grading structure is sensible, review the JDs of the grade above and see if the post in question should be regarded. May indicate a need to review a few JDs
