Slide 1: Title Slide
●Start Blackboard Collaborate recording
●Depending on your comfort level with managing privileges in Blackboard collaborate, consider opening the text chat privileges for students to chat for 2-3 minutes before the start of the class.
●Remove all attendee privileges before beginning class. Let them know that privileges will be added and removed as needed in these sessions.
●Welcome students to day 1 of advisory / 1 min
Slide 2: All about Me
●Include pictures of yourself and family on the All About Me slide of the Powerpoint
●Use the pictures to share a little about yourself with your students / 2 min
Slide 3: True or False
●Share three pictures on this slide indicating two true facts about yourself and one fake fact.
●Explain to students that each picture reflects a fact about you - and that two of them are true and one of them is false.
●Share each fact while referencing the photo related to each.
●After relating all three facts, enable polling (A, B, C) and ask everyone to vote as to which story or fact was the false one.
●After 30 seconds, share polling results on the screen. Then reveal the correct answer. / 3 min
Slide 4: Goals of Advisory
●Explain each of the goals listed on the Goals of Advisory slide.
a.Help you enjoy school more.
b.See everybody improve.
c.Get to know each other personally.
i.Sometimes in an online class it’s more difficult to get to know the people in your class than in a live setting. Let’s try to change that! / 4 min
Slide 5: Activity: Name Game! Explain:
●Explain
a.For this activity, students will be split into groups of 5 or fewer in breakout rooms.
b.Everyone will have text chat privileges, and that they should be sure to mind their language during the activity.
c.Each person in the breakout room should share whether or not they have a nickname that they have been called and that they like. Each person should explain the nickname (remind students to keep it clean)
d.If a person does not have a nickname - or like the nickname they have - they should share a few things about themselves. The rest of the students then can suggest nicknames and let the student choose the one he/she likes, or to suggest their own.
e.Someone from each group must volunteer to be the leader for the group and writes down everyone’s nicknames and reasons
f.Explain that you will be visiting the room to monitor the discussions
g.After 5 minutes, all students will be pulled back into the main room where we will share our nicknames.
●Check for understanding of the activity / 3 min
Breakout Room Activity
●Split students into groups and set timer to 5 minutes (use less if time does not permit the full 5 minutes)
●Move in and out of rooms to check on progress and appropriate behavior
●With 1 minute left on the timer, create an announcement indicating that the groups should finish up their discussion.
●When time expires, return all students to the main room / 5 min
Slide 6: Sharing Nicknames
●Remove all student privileges - turn on audio and text chat for each group leader when it is their turn to speak. Disable once each is done presenting.
●If there is enough time, ask the leaders from each group to share the nicknames of their group members (and the reasons behind them) with the class using the microphone or text chat. Ask them to raise their hands when they are ready to share.
●If a student uses text chat, read the chat out loud to the class.
●Record names and nicknames on the whiteboard for the class - add additional whiteboard screens if needed
●If time runs short, you can return to this activity at the end of subsequent classes over the next several days. / 10 min
Slide 7: This is Just the Beginning
●Explain that this is just the beginning of getting to know each other and that there will be lots of activities through the course that will help you and the students to get to know each other better.
●Answer any questions students might have, share your contact information, and thank them for attending the first class.
●Stop Blackboard Recording / 2 min
