Pupil Premium Strategy January 2017
Why do we receive EYPP and how much do we receive?
Early Years Pupil Premium is approximately £300 per year for each 3-4yr old who is eligible. The criteria for EYPP is the same criteria as that for Free School Meals.
Of 26 full time equivalent children in the nursery class, 12 children were eligible for the pupil premium in 2016. This meant that Kate Greenaway received approximately £3600.00 to spend on enhancing learning opportunities for these children.
How do we spend this money ?
At Kate Greenaway we use this funding to enable us to offer Forest School learning to all children. The use of this funding is reviewed every year by the Senior Leadership Team and the Governing Body.
Why Forest School ?
Forest School offers children a rich real experience which is designed to develop the whole child, reflecting the principles of the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum.
By participating in engaging, motivating and achievable tasks in a woodland environment each child has the opportunity to learn about and engage with nature. They learn how to handle appropriate risks, how to use their own initiative, to solve problems and co-operate with others.
The forest school approach supports children to develop intrinsic motivation to want to learn and achieve for their own pleasure, along with a range of other life skills such as negotiating skills, rich language development and confidence.
How do we measure the impact of Forest School on children’s learning?
Staff observe, track and assess all children throughout the year and these assessments are recorded and analysed termly. To measure the impact on children’s learning we use The Early Excellence Assessment Tracker system which includes the Ferres Laevers scales of Well Being and Involvement, The Characteristics of Effective learning and the seven curriculum areas of the Early Years Foundation Stage.
Positive impact on children’s development after they have taken part in Forest School can also be noted less formally by staff observation and interaction, particularly in the following areas.
•Engagement in activities
•Motivation to learn
•Confidence to take part in learning
•Language built and used
•Relationships built with staff and other children
•Parental engagement and parents confidence and ability to support learning for their children
Importantly, for those children at risk of underachieving, Forest School has been shown to accelerate their interest in learning and therefore their overall progress.
Which children go to Forest School?
All the children who are due to leave the nursery school and transition to reception class in primary school enjoy the Forest School experience over the course of their final year at Kate Greenaway.
Approximately 50% of these children are eligible for pupil premium (census 2014/15/16)
Who takes the children to Forest School?
Our Forest School trained teacher facilitates the Forest school practice at Camley Street Nature Reserve in Kings Cross. Our Deputy Head Teacher and early years educators accompany the children to Camley Street. Parents are encouraged to come along with their children as this supports our relationship with parents as partners and enhances parent’s ability to support their children’s learning.
At Kate Greenaway we aim to equip all our children with a range of skills, attitudes and knowledge to support their lifelong learning.
We use Forest School to help us to do this and we use our EYPP to financially support Forest School.
