Frequently Asked Questions

Who needs to apply for Garda Vetting?

·  Any DIT student whose course or activity involves access to children or vulnerable adults must be vetted. There may be other activities as part of your studies or other parts of your student life that require Garda Vetting.

·  This is standard procedure in the Republic Of Ireland for anyone carrying out work or activities which mainly consist of them having access to, or contact with, children or vulnerable adults.

How do I apply?

·  The first step is to read and understand the guidelines before completing the NVB1 (Garda Vetting) Invitation Form. The application form consists of a vetting invitation (NVB1 Form), guidelines and a “100 point check” (combination of suggested documents to verify your identity).

·  Return your completed form and your supporting documents to the DIT Admissions Office (address above) or to the staff member who gave it to you.

·  There is no mistake too small. If you make a mistake (or your form is incomplete / illegible), your application may not be processed, may be subject to delays and you may be asked to resubmit the NVB1 form again.

·  If the applicant is under 18 years of age, then a Form NVB3 (Parent / Guardian consent form) must be submitted with your application.

What happens next?

Once we receive your form we will start your application on the National Vetting Bureau (NVB) online system where you will receive an email invitation to your DIT student email directly from the NVB inviting you to apply online. THE INVITATION WILL EXPIRE AFTER 30 DAYS.

What happens if I have a criminal record?

The Head of DIT Admissions and Enrolment Planning will receive information about this privately. Depending on the nature of the conviction you may be invited to meet with the Admissions Officer and Programme Chair for your DIT course.

What if I have a conviction but I don’t declare it in my online application?

The Garda Vetting Bureau will still find the details and will inform the Admissions Officer as above.

What type of ID do I submit?

Please refer to “The 100 point check” (page two of the NVB1 form) which lists all the suggested documents required to verify your identity which will accompany your NVB1 form.
