THE GREAT ADVENTURE

CATHOLIC BIBLE STUDY

The Catholic Church gave us the Bible. It is the story of our family, told by the loving God who created us. We hear the Bible read at Mass but often we wonder how those readings fit together. The Great Adventure Bible study helps you make the connection. It is a Catholic Bible Study because it shows how the story that runs through Scripture is the story that grounds the Catholic faith. The Great Adventure helps you live your life in the story today. FUTURE DATE IS:

BLESSED VIRGIN MARY

THE MOTHER OF GOD

CCC494 Thus giving her consent to God’s word, Mary becomes the mother of Jesus.

CCC495 In fact the One whom she conceived as man by the Holy Spirit, who truly became her Son according to the Flesh, was none other than the Father’s eternal Son, the second person of the Holy Trinity. Thus the Church confesses that Mary is truly “Mother of God” (Theotokos)

Our Lady gave birth to Jesus, one person with two distinct matures, one human and one divine. Jesus is the 2nd Person of the Blessed Trinity in the flesh. This makes her not only the “Mother of Jesus” but also the Mother of God Incarnate.

“The Council of Ephesus (AD431) was of decisive importance in clarifying this, for during that Council, to the great joy of Christians, the truth of divine motherhood of Mary was solemnly confirmed as a truth of the Church’s faith. Mary is the Mother of God (Theotokos or God bearer) since by the power of the Holy Spirit she conceived in her virginal womb and brought into the world Jesus Christ, the Son of God who is one being with the Father.”

Encyclical Letter “Redemptoris Mater by Pope John Paul II.

By hailing Mary as the “Mother of God” the Church does not in any way teach or imply that she pre-existed God. Rather very early on the Catholic Church recognized that the title “Mother of God” is the most accurate way of describing her maternal relationship with Jesus. She gave birth to a person. This person has two unique natures, one human, and onedivine. The Divine is the 2nd Person of the Blessed Trinity (God Himself). That is why the Catholic Church has always pointed to the truth that the Blessed Virgin Mary was truly the Mother of God.

St. Elizabeth proclaimed this great truth about Mary as the Mother of God when she exclaimed “Who am I that the Mother of my Lord should come to me.” (Luke 1:43)

St. Irenaeus of Lyons AD 189 The Virgin Mary, being obedient to his word, received from an angel the glad tidings that she would bear God.

St. Ambrose of Milan AD377 The first thing which kindles ardor in learning is the greatness of the teacher. What is greater than the Mother of God? What more glorious than she whom glory itself chose?
