R E S O L U T I O N

WHEREAS, The passing of Patricia Lee Clayworth of San Antonio on March 20, 2001, at the age of 58, has brought a profound sense of loss to the family and friends of this esteemed woman; and

WHEREAS, Born on March 23, 1942, Ms.Clayworth began teaching in the San Antonio Independent School District in 1969; throughout her distinguished career, she was known for her innovative methods of reaching her students and helping young people achieve success not only in the classroom, but also in life; and

WHEREAS, While working at Mark Twain Middle School, this outstanding teacher helped to develop the Frog Pond program, which strived to make a difference in the lives of middle school students who were considered at risk to drop out; by the end of the program's first year, seven of its members were eligible for National Honor Society membership; and

WHEREAS, A passionate advocate for students and public education, Ms.Clayworth had a positive impact in other ways; she served as president of the San Antonio Teachers Council and was vice president of the San Antonio Federation of Teachers; and

WHEREAS, Her influence also was felt in the political sphere, where her expertise of operating phone banks made Ms.Clayworth a great asset on many campaigns; she played an integral role in Henry Cisneros becoming the mayor of San Antonio in 1981; other political figures she lent assistance to included state senators, state representatives, U.S. congressmen, and a number of school board members and city officials; and

WHEREAS, Widely respected and admired for her sense of purpose, high expectations, and deep commitment to fairness and justice, Ms.Clayworth used her abilities and considerable talents to benefit the state's most valuable and fragile resourceits children; although she will be deeply missed, her bright spirit and indelible legacy will continue to live on in the hearts of all those whose lives she enriched; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Patricia Lee Clayworth and extend sincere sympathy to the members of her family: to her mother, Velma Clayworth; to her brother, Gerald Clayworth and his wife, Emma; to her nephews, Gerald Clayworth, Jr., and Frank Clayworth; to her niece, Sherri Wiebush; and to her many other relatives, friends, and colleagues; and, be it further

RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Patricia Lee Clayworth.
