R E S O L U T I O N

WHEREAS, The family and many friends of Lora Bell Lockhart were greatly saddened by her passing on January 8, 1998, at the age of 88, and we join them in mourning their loss; and

WHEREAS, Mrs.Lockhart was raised in Minnesota, and it was there she met her future husband while a student at the University of Minnesota; in 1936 they were married, and they enjoyed a relationship that continued to grow in mutual affection, admiration, and respect until his death; and

WHEREAS, After marrying, the couple settled in Alpine, where Mrs.Lockhart assisted her husband in setting up his private practice, and after World War II they opened the Lockhart Clinic; and

WHEREAS, In the 1940s and 1950s, Mrs.Lockhart worked as a society reporter and bookkeeper for the Alpine Avalanche, and she brought to these positions her characteristic diligence and enthusiasm; and

WHEREAS, An accomplished musician, she lent her talents on the violin and piano to a number of musical presentations, and her lovely singing voice was a familiar and welcome presence in the First Presbyterian Church choir; and

WHEREAS, She was well known as a vital and valued member of her community, and she gave of her time and energy to a number of worthwhile organizations, including the American Legion Auxiliary, the Alpine Community Center, the American Association of University Women, and the Girl Scouts, and she was designated Beta Sigma Phi's "First Lady of the Year" in 1972; and

WHEREAS, Throughout her lifetime, Lora Bell Lockhart distinguished herself as a warm friend and a good neighbor, and although she has been missed, her spirit surely lives on in the hearts of all those fortunate enough to have known her; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas Legislature hereby honor the memory of Lora Bell Lockhart and extend sincere sympathy to the members of her family: to her children, Joyce Lockhart Wildenthal, Lolly Lockhart, William E. Lockhart III, and Mary Bell Lockhart; to her grandchildren, Becky Wildenthal, Bryan Wildenthal, Lora Wildenthal, Shelly Beard, Amy Beard, and Taylor Woodruff; to her greatgrandsons, James Hewson and Justin Hewson; to her brotherinlaw, Col. Vincent M. Lockhart; and to her many other relatives and friends; and, be it further

RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the members of her family and that when the Texas House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Lora Bell Lockhart.
