Primary Sports GRant

Where the money went…..

During the academic year September 2015 –July 2016, Fort Royal received a Primary Sports Grant of £5,060. The aim of this grant is to improve the quality of PE and sports activities offered to pupils.

This year, a Key Stage 2 group has taken part in a “Dancefest” project entitled “Big Jigsaw”. This involveda specialist dance instructor coming to school for a 6 week block of sessions, creating, rehearsing and performing dance movements with the childrenon an “Autumn” theme, inside and outside. The project culminatedin a special film premiere of the finished video, which also included dances produced by other special schools across Hereford and Worcester.

At Fort Royal, we value our RDA (Riding for the Disabled) sessions at Longlands Care Farm at Whitbourne. To ensure that we could maximise the opportunities for our pupils, we have funded extra staffing support on a weekly basis. This has enabled more children with sensory and/or complex needs to access horse riding and benefit from the vestibular, tactile, sensory experience that they have during each session.

Also, back at school, pupils who have sensory or self-regulation difficulties really benefit from using our Hydrotherapy pool for water sessions throughout the week. To support this staff-intensive activity, we have funded additional staff to support pupils while they use the pool and changing rooms. This has enabled more pupils to use the pool on a regular basis, providing them with self-regulation opportunities, and extra sensory experiences, as well as helping pupils to learn more about how to start and finish much enjoyed activities and to practice self-help skills such as drying and dressing themselves.
