Maritime Experience

Deckhand - Ebony Shine 75 meter Private Motor Yacht (January –April ) - I joined the yacht in the Netherland due to the yacht being under arrest was on board for safe manning with the hope for it to be released, there was 3 on deck including me. I was involved in washing the vessel down as well as general upkeep of the exterior as the vessel came out of an extensive refit. Other job includes cleaning the interior, engine room bilges as well as painting some of them.

Chase Boat Captain/Lead Deckhand - Bravado 45 meter Private Motor Yacht (June 2016–November 2016) - I joined the yacht while still in the yard but coming towards the end of the refit. I was involved in fitting out most of the yacht eg hatches, rails and water tight doors to name a few. As the Chase Boat Captain I went to the Wajer Yard in Holland to oversee commissioning the chase boat and to do a familiarisation day. After leaving the yard I skippered the chase boat to Amsterdam then over to London andback to Belgium where I helped load the chase boat onto the transporter for delivery to Portugal. I skippered the chase boat in Portugal and then from Gibraltar to Ibiza and then locally around Ibiza and Mallorca. When not on the chase boat I was involved in the usual deck operations eg being part of the mooring party duringanchoring etc. When guests were on boardand wanting to do water sports I helped teach them how to use the jet pack, fly board and jet surf. I also instructed the other deck handshow to drive the tender in tight berthing conditions. I was responsible for doing my own accountingand everything to do with the chase boat including registration for shipping it to the Caribbean. When the bosun was on leave I stepped up to lead a team of 3 on deck duties including preparation for the Atlantic crossing, helping the captain with the boat’s paperwork, looking after contractors, etc. I was also responsible for ordering deck consumables.

Deckhand/Carpenter – Titan 80 meter Private Motor Yacht (March 2016 – May 2016) – I joined at a busy time at the end of a 5 year refit in the yard. I was involved in the usual deck operations like being part of the mooring party, anchoring and being trained to go over the side. I was able to drive the three on-board tenders but not with guests on due to on-boardpolicy. Being a split role I was doing interior furniture repairs and getting scratches out of the interior floor as well as some repairs on the tenders. When the owner was onboard I did night shifts with another deckhand which involved washing the tenders ready for the morning, changing cushion covers, scrubbing the teak decks, rinsing the boat down, etc. I also did watch keeping on the bridge with the officers.

March 2015-March 2016 –I took a year out for personal reasons and during that time I did some OOW modules.

Lead Deckhand – 4YOU 55 meter Amels180 Charter/Private Motor Yacht (November 2014 – March 2015) – At the beginning, I was involved in getting the yacht ready for yacht express transport to the Caribbean. This involved waxing and polishing all stainless and painted surfaces, stowing all exterior furniture and tenders. Once in situ, doing night anchor watches, setting the whole yacht up for guests and the owner (when on board), including rinsing down, preparing the tender for the day, getting the water slide & other water sports ready if required, doing beach set ups, doing tender runs, and getting the yacht ready for sea. I also helped with chart corrections, passage planning and doing bridge watches during the day and at night. Using my boat building skills, doing repairs when required eg sanding out dents in the teak decks, repairing marks on outside tables, on the paintwork and on the gel coat, Repairing chips in the tenders and fixing granite tops. I was also given charge of anchoring the boat, sometimes doing two anchors spreads when in harbour, and setting the boat up for coming into port with lines and fenders. I also helped the engineers with bunkering fuel and other engineering jobs.

Deckhand – Raasta 47 meter Heesen Private Motor Yacht (September 2013- to October 2014) – At the start, I was involved in a 6 mouth refit which included grinding and painting most of the deck lockers, tender garage and bilges, together with sanding the teak boards in the tender garage. I had extensive tender driving experience eg following the boat to new anchorages, docking the tender alongside with or without guests on board. I was involved in bridge watches at night and during the day, helping with passage plans and anchoring the boat at different stages. Being the only deck hand on board I had solely responsible for washing the boat down. I was also part of the firefighting team and one of the rescue swimmers on board. I also acted as second engineer assisting the engineer with fixing mechanical problems, bunkering fuel etc, and responsible for the boat’s alarm on weekend watches.

Day work – Illusion I 46.05 meter Motor Yacht (20-22 Sep 2013) -Cleaning and polishing the companionway stairs to the engine room and the stainless steel on the engine exhaust and supports.

Discovery Yachts Ltd (August 2011 - August 2013):I was involved in plug making for a 57ft yacht, the resin infusing on two 57ft yachts, helping with the lamination of a 55ft yacht, and with fitting keels, bulkheads, the fitting of deck equipment eg hatches, jib tracks, cleats etc, the laying of teak onto the deck, fitting engine insulation, fitting out of heads, GRP repairs, making and installing various joinery components, while attending college 1 day a week.
