Course Description

This program is designed specifically for college students interested in a career as an Attorney or Paralegal professional. Through partnership with area colleges and universities, this 8-week intensive course immerses students interested in legal careers with critical knowledge and contacts from experts in the legal profession.

Objectives

An 8-week comprehensive series designed to prepare college students for careers in legal fields as well as teach students about the profession as a whole. It is further designed to give participants a closer look at the field of law by exposing them to practical scenarios and hands-on instruction from very accomplished members of the legal profession.

Requirements and Expectations

  • Each participant is required to complete and submit an application for admission into the program.
  • Participants are required to attend any/all sessions that are designated as mandatory.
  • In the event that a participant needs to miss a session for emergency reasons, he/she must give prior written notification. For any reason that is missed, the participant must make arrangements to attend a make-up session.
  • Participants are expected to dress appropriately (business attire) for all sessions unless otherwise stated.
  • Group participation is mandatory; participant input is critical to the success of this program. Learning is the process of two-way communication therefore participation will be both voluntarily as well as solicited from all participants.

Course Topics

  1. Introduction to Course & Legal Profession-On the first night of the program, students will learn about the basics of the course and an introduction of the legal system in the United States.
  1. Introduction to Court & Meet Professionals- Students will learn about a multitude of legal careers from various legal professionals, such as criminal defense attorneys, prosecuting attorneys, civil litigators, judges, business litigators and paralegals that practice in a wide variety of subject matters all that involve litigation.
  1. Actual Courtroom Trial (2 sessions)- This evening is designed to have experienced trial attorneys who will show video of a real trial they participated in. Questions and answers from the students are answered. It is an amazing opportunity for students to learn how attorneys and paralegals prepare their cases for trial, the stresses and concerns they have, as well as, what each day looks like to a trial attorney and paralegal;
  1. Resume, Social Media, Personal Statements and Internship Preparation-

This part of the program provides instruction to students on how to best prepare resumes and to write a personal statement for law school applications. This session will also cover how to prepare for interviews andhow to put a professional look to their social media platforms, geared toward obtaining a job. They will also learn how to develop contacts and the “dos and don’ts” on how to leverage contacts to open opportunities to secure their first job

  1. Law School Admissions/Financial Aid- Meet with law school admissions reps and learn about the law school application process. Financial aid applications and financing law school will also be addressed.
  1. Passionate Careers and Fulfilled Lives and Wellness-Here, Robert Bianchi will provide his lecture on handling workplace and personal difficulties in one’s personal and professional lives and how to cultivate a more positive attitude to be effective at your job and increase the likelihood of promotion and a more joyful career and life. A mental health professional will also address the topic of how to maintain a healthy mental and physical life while dealing with work related stress. These presenters are international speakers who have given this lecture to attorney groups, students, and business leaders.
  1. Mock Interviews, Graduation and Awarding of Certificates of Completion- When the student has completed this intense and valuable program, they are awarded a Certificate of Completion and are welcome to express their completion of the program on their resume. This is a very good opportunity for the student to showcase to a prospective law school or employer their dedication and commitment to the legal profession by their willingness to take and complete such an intense course to better prepare them for a career in the legal profession.
