What Would Happen If There Were No Power

(CET4 90.1)

1. Ever since early this century, electricity has become an essential part of our modern life.

2. If there were no electric power...

3. Therefore ...

Ever since early this century, electricity has become an essential part of our modern life. It has played a decisive role in modern industry, agriculture, science and technology, national defense and education. Nobody can deny the fact that the development of our civilization depends on electricity.

If there were no electric power, our modern world would be in trouble. For example, our industry would stop working since most of the machines are driven by electricity. And our communication such as telephone, telegraph and fax would break down. In short, our modern life would be impossible without electricity.

Therefore, we should make better use of electric power. We should educate people to save electricity and not to waste the energy resources with no thought for the future. At the same time we must do our best to exploit more electric resources to meet the needs of the human beings and to avoid energy crisis in the future.

How to Solve the Problem of Heavy Traffic

(CET6 90.1)

问题:城市交通拥挤

解决方案(solution):

建造(lay down)更多道路

优点:(1) 降低街道拥挤程度

(2) 加速车流(flow of traffic)

缺点:占地过多

开辟(open up)更多公共汽车线路

优点:减少自行车与小汽车

缺点:对部分人可能造成不方便

结论:两者结合

It is indeed the case that many cities in our country have seen traffic congestion with all the roads packed with cars, bicycles and pedestrians. Then what measures can we take to cope with this problem?

One suggestion to this problem is to build more and wider roads to make the public highways less crowded and speed up the flow of traffic. The other suggestion is to expand the number of public bus routes, so that more people can be transported and fewer people will have to travel by car or bicycle.

However, either of these two suggestions has its demerits. The former may occupy too much land that could be used for farms or houses; the latter may bring inconvenience to people who have to walk long distances to bus stops or wait for long periods in bus lines. To my mind, the best solution to the problem of heavy traffic is to combine the two: that is, to build more roads in places where land is less useful, and at the same time to increase the number of public bus routes.

Make Our Cities Greener

(CET4 90.6)

1. 城市绿化的现状

2. 绿化的好处(如:清洁空气,美化城市,改善气侯)

3. 怎样才能实现绿化

In recent years, many trees and flowers have been planted and some cities have undergone rapid changes. They look greener than ever before. But there are still some cities, which haven’t changed much. Trees and lawn can hardly be found and what we can see is the gray buildings and houses. We are facing a tough task to make those cities greener.

To make our cities greener has many advantages. It can purify the air, beautify our cities and improve our environment. As we know, trees and flowers can absorb carbon dioxide and produce oxygen, which does good to the health of people. Besides, if cities were surrounded by trees and flowers or if we lived in the green world, how nice it would be.

Then how to make our cities greener? From my point of view, first we should make people aware of the importance of making cities greener. Next, great efforts should be made to plant more trees and flowers. Meanwhile, we should carefully look after the planted trees and flowers and no one has the right to destroy these plants. As long as we do in this way, we can certainly make our cities greener before long.

How to Solve the Housing Problem in Big Cities

(CET6 90.6)

四种可能解决住房问题的方案:

多造高层建筑

向地下发展

建造卫星城市

疏散城市人口

我的看法

One of the most serious problems of modern cities is the housing shortage. This problem not only brings us lots of inconvenience and trouble but also leads to social unrest and economic inefficiency. Then what action can we take to solve this problem?

One suggestion to this problem is to build more high-rise apartments because these buildings can accommodate more people. Another suggestion is to explore the underground areas and build houses there. A further suggestion is to set up more satellite cities so that people can live there. Still another suggestion is to evacuate urban inhabitants so as to lessen the housing problems in cities.

Of these suggestions, I appreciate the first, the third and the last one because it is cheaper to build flats above ground than below. Besides, people prefer to live in the open air and see the sunshine.

The second idea is not practical. One reason for this is that it is dangerous to construct living places under streets and buildings. Another reason is that it would take too much time to carry out, and in the meantime the number of people waiting for houses would increase, thus making the problem worse.
