ABOUT THE SCHOOL…..

Norwich School is a co-educational, independent day school for pupils aged seven to eighteen. Set in the Cathedral Close, Norwich School is a traditional, yet lively place where boys and girls enjoy a rounded and stimulating education.

The School is characterised by strong, warm relationships and a profound appreciation of scholarship.

Norwich School has a long and fascinating history. Its roots and the buildings it occupies date back to the foundation of the Cathedral. It is impossible to ignore the beauty of the Cathedral Close and the magnificent mediaeval buildings.

Learning and scholarship are at the heart of the school, both in relation to our own pupils and to those from other schools who attend our outreach courses.

Norwich School is committed to:

·  producing scholarly, reflective young people who are capable of handling difficult concepts and expressing profound thought;

·  providing a rich, varied and broad education that develops the diverse talents of the boys and girls;

equipping pupils for leadership and service.

LINKS WITH OTHER SCHOOLS…..

The school has a longstanding relationship with Notre Dame High School and is an educational partner with City Academy Norwich.

EXISTING NORWICH SCHOOL SCHEMES:

Summer University Access Scheme

Now in its eleventh year, over 1,000 pupils from schools throughout East Anglia have benefited from the scheme, many going on to attend the UK’s most prestigious universities.

Saturday Morning Schemes

Our Maths Masterclasses are now in their eight year. These classes receive generous support from the Royal Institution of Great Britain.

The SHINE languages courses in French, German, Spanish and Russian began five years ago. Many of the students commented that they had gained in confidence, particularly by working in small groups on their oral skills.

Physics sessions sponsored by the Ogden Trust have also been popular and are set to continue.

Recent developments include the introduction of Mathematics classes for Year 6 to assist with the transition to secondary school. These have also received funding from SHINE.

Latin with City Academy

As the educational partner of City Academy, Norwich, we have supported the teaching of Latin to gifted and talented Year 7 and 8 pupils from City Academy.

OUR INVITATION TO YOUR PUPILS…..

The SHINE Languages Scheme:

This is now the sixth year of our MFL scheme for young people which aims to improve the uptake and retention of languages by Norfolk children.

Since its start in 2011, the languages scheme has received support from the SHINE Foundation (Support and Help IN Education). It is being hosted by Norwich School and teaching staff from Norwich School will plan and run the sessions, assisted by language assistants.

The scheme will run on selected Saturday mornings, providing activities for each pupil in their chosen core language (French, German, Spanish). The emphasis will be on using the language in a variety of stimulating contexts.

As part of the scheme we will also be providing optional classes in Russian and Mandarin for beginners.

ATTENDANCE IS FREE…..

The SHINE Languages Scheme is free to attend:

There is NO COST for pupils to attend. For this reason, we ask that you nominate just three Year 9 and three Year 10 pupils for each core language (French, Spanish, German) and also three Year 9 and three Year 10 pupils for Russian and Mandarin.

A key aim of this course is to provide opportunities for keen linguists to fulfil their potential regardless of financial means. Our partnership with SHINE enables us to offer the course free of charge. Therefore please prioritise pupils receiving free schools meals, assistance with uniform, or in receipt of other financial support. We will pay travel expenses for any pupil for whom this would be a financial burden; please indicate this in ‘other information’ on the reply slip and we will follow this up.

DSC00081a JPGReserve name(s) for each language / age category may be included. The most popular course has proven to be the French course which is expected to be over-subscribed, and therefore reserves for this course are unlikely to gain a place.

You may recognise some of your former pupils pictured at one of our university access summer schools!
