Programme outline

Watching films can be a good hobby. Watching films in English canhelpimprove your listening and speaking skills. In this programme, an animated camera and an animated clapperboard introduce to you various types of films. There are cartoons, adventure films, comedies, science fiction films for you to choose from. What type of filmsdo you like?

Communicative functions

1. Learn about different types of films, e.g., comedies, adventure films, cartoons, etc.

2. Express feelings towards or state opinions about different types of films, e.g., I like films that make me laugh, Watching them is like travelling to a different world.

Suggested activities

1. Introduce the main characters using the images in COPYMASTER 1: the animatedCamera and Clapperboard.

2. Briefly introduce the film types: comedy, adventure, romantic, science fiction, Kung Fu, animated. Teacher can write the new words on the board to arouse pupils’ interest in knowing what they really mean.

3. Ask pupils to talk abouttheir experience of film watching.They can talk about why and where they watched the films, how they felt about the films, etc.

4. Watch the programme together. Teacher can pause after each film type is introduced. Have pupils talk about theirfeelings towards the story.

5. Tell pupils to look also at the responses of the audience to the films in the programme too. The audience’s responses can somewhat explain the impact of the films.

For example:

Comedy- films that make you laugh

Adventure films- films that excite you by taking you to a journey to a different

world

Romantic films- films mostly about boys and girls falling in love

Science fiction films- films based on some science elements but not really

scientific.Most of the plots are about some hero who saves the world with his/her

super powers that surprise the audience immensely

Animated films- films in which the images areprocessed and generated by

computeranimation

Kung Fu films- films about Kung Fuor martial arts

6. To have a quick revision of the film types introduced after watching the programme, pupils can try writing down the type of filmunder eachpicturein COPYMASTER 2Part A.Teacher can replay the programme if pupils need help.

7. Pupils then complete the sentences in COPYMASTER 2 PART B as an exercise to reinforce the understanding of the target vocabulary.

To encourage pupils talk about films using the target language, ask them to share their film watching experience in pairs. They can talk about why and where they watched the films and how they felt about them by writing their ideas down in COPYMASTER2PART C. An example sentence is given. If pupils do not have much experience in watching films, they can talk about the TV programmes or cartoons or short videos on DVDs instead.
