What to study – Measurement Exam

English system of measurement – inches, feet, yards, miles, ounces, pounds, etc…

Metric system of measurement – mm, cm, L, mL, cm3, Celsius

Prefixes:

Kilo = 1000

Centi = 0.01

Milli = 0.001

Length:

-  metric ruler

-  mm, cm, m, km

Volume: amount of SPACE an object takes up

·  1mL = 1 cm3

·  Volume of a liquid: Use a graduated cylinder à (L or mL)

o  Measure at the bottom of the curve

·  Volume of a regular solid: LENGTH X WIDTH X HEIGHT (cm3)

·  Volume of an irregular solid: displacement (mL)

o  Measure the volume of the liquid

o  Drop the solid into the graduated cylinder à measure the volume

o  Subtract the original volume from the volume with the object in the grad cylinder

Mass: the amount of MATTER an object has (grams)

·  Measured with a triple beam balance

Density: mass / volume (g/ cm3-for a solid) (g/ cm3-for a liquid)

·  Density of water = 1 g/ mL

·  Density of an object ALWAYS REMAINS THE SAME

·  Objects that FLOAT in water have a density of LESS than 1 g/ mL

·  Objects that SINK in water have a density of MORE than 1 g/ mL

Temperature: measures with a thermometer

·  Fahrenheit Scale – not metric scale

·  Celsius Scale – metric scale

o  Water freezes = 0°C

o  Water boils = 100°C

o  Human body temp = 37°C
