Welcome to Earth Science class at Skirball Middle School! In this class, we will look at many different things in the world around us and how the place where you live affects you and how you affect it.

COURSE DESCPRIPTION: (CURSO DESCPRIPCION)

By the end of grade six, students will have investigated components of scientific inquiry, Earth’s structure, plate tectonics, earthquakes, volcanoes, water’s role in shaping the Earth, heat transfer, solar radiation, nutrient cycling, food chains and food webs, ecosystems, and natural resources.

Each student's grade will be determined according to the California State Standards for 6th grade Earth Science. Grades will be based on individual achievement. Tardies: Each student is expected to quietly enter the room on time with all of their materials. The student will receive a warning if he or she is tardy and may receive further consequences should tardies persist.

Dear parent or guardian,

I would like to welcome all the students back from a well-deserved summer vacation. I look forward to a successful school year. My name is Mrs. Yamamoto and I will be your child’s Grade 6th teacher. I have high expectations for your child, and I will be doing all that I can to help you child achieve those expectations. I will do my best this academic year to ensure that each child has a motivating and safe learning experience in the classroom.

I am looking forward to getting to know you and your child this year. The students will achieve many successes in terms of academic growth, greater self-confidence, and improved independent working skills. Good communication between parent, teacher, and student is very important for your child’s academic growth. In order to best meet the needs of your child, I believe that an open teacher parent relationship is imperative. We both need to be partners in the learning process. A positive parent-teacher relationship helps your child feel good about school, and be successful in school. Your child’s agenda will be used as a communication tool on a daily basis if needed.

Homework will be assigned daily and should take no more then 30 minutes to complete (not including studying for tests and independent research projects). The purpose of homework is to reinforce what we have learned in class, and to teach responsibility. If a student does not complete their homework, they will need to make it up otherwise, they will lose scholar dollars.

Attached you will receive a copy of the classroom expectations for success. Please review the attached sheets with your child and return them to school with your signature.
