WHAT SHOULD I BE DOING FOR THE NEXT 10 WEEKS?
A) When you have a mentor and you are doing some form of pre-project, experimental planning, data
collection, or data analysis (Jr. and Sr. ):
___1) you will check in with me at least once every 2 weeks with an update. Carve out this time. Most
communication(s) can be emailed or followed up by an email to me. You will email copies (cc, me) of
yourcommunication(s) with your mentor to me.
___2) you will maintain an electronic research notebook. Your mentor should sign off on your hours. You can
of course have me look at it. Your notebook will be turned with your 5 week grading sheet and your
end-of quarter grading sheet.
___3) you will perform tasks as recommended by / an in conjunction with your mentor.
___4) you will continue to update and improve your grasp of important themes, vocabulary, ideas, work (past
and present) by means of a refined literature review. A small synopsis of every article you read will be
sent via email to me, upon completion of the article.
___5) you will meet all deadlines assigned by your mentor and by the facilitator for the course.
___6) you will prepare a 5 minute power point presentation. You want to use the presentation rubric.
You should have three or so power point slides. You should be prepared for questions.
B) When you have a mentor, but are NOT yet engaged in some form of pre-project, experimental
planning,data collection, or data analysis (Jr. and Sr. ):
___1) you will attend class at your scheduled time. You will copy me on all communications (including
synopses of our meetings, and communications with your mentor, etc...)
___2) you will continue a literature review &/ or some aspect of the project you have discussed with me
or with your mentor.
___3) you will send a brief synopsis of every articlefrom you literature review or project via email to me
___4) you will maintain an electronic research notebook, which details your work moving forward, towards
implementation of a project ...and should have me sign off on your hours. You will meetalldeadlines
___5) you will prepare a 5 minute power point presentation. You want to use the presentation rubric.
You should have three or so power point slides. You should be prepared for questions.
C) If you do NOT have a mentor / project idea (Jr. and Sr. ):
___1) try to develop a professional relationship, via; family, family connections, authors your literature review
articles, universities, museum docents, cooperative extensions, governmental services, businesses etc
___2) you should take the responsibility to make at least 2 appointments, with me, for us to talk.
___3) you must attend class at your scheduled time.
___4) you will continue a literature review &/orsome aspect of the project you have discussed with me.
___5) you will email me a brief synopsis of every article …as you will all communications.
___6) you are maintaining a research notebook and should have me sign off on your hours
___7) you will prepare a 5 minute power point presentation. You want to use the presentation rubric.

WHAT SHOULD I BE DOING FOR THE NEXT 10 WEEKS?
A-C) are issues appropriate to second and third year students and are not included on this page …This page is really for first year students and these activities do not follow a strict 10 week cycle. However, D 1a and 1b should be completed by the end of the first semester. D 2) is assigned for the 2nd quarter only.
D) As a first year student, you should have a science fair project. In thisevaluation cycle you will:
___1a) engage in pre-project planning, data collection &/or data analysis. Pre-project planning includes
but is NOT limited to:
___ using the available / afforded sources (books, websites, articles) to generate an idea to study.
___ developing a(n) hypothesis or problem statement, per our class work. This is to be emailed to me.
___ reading research articles and taking notes pertinent to your project. A brief synopsis of each article
is to be sent via email to me. Be sure to include the citation of the work.
___searching for / acquiring/ budgeting for materials required for the project.
___developing a procedure, a calendar of activity and / or design for experimentation. A copy of
the work is to be sent via email to me.
___contacting professionals for help / advice. (e.g. asking me for help with your work).
___ staying in communication as to your progress / issues / questions with me. We should be touching
base with each other at least once every week.
___1b) While engaged in data collection you will be:
___able to do the work of other classes, during your class time in Science Research. You should be
reporting to the class and staying in class every assigned period, unless you have permission to go
to the library or see another teacher.
___ staying in communication as to your progress / issues / questions with me. We should be touching
base with each other at least once every week.You may need to monitor and adjust your project.
___ keeping accurate , dated records of your data. Once each week, an electronic or written logof data
&/or activity will be shown to me and signed off, by me.
___ determining how you will analyze the data. This may take research on your part.
___1c) When you have completed the experiment, as expressed in your procedure or calendar, you may
begin toanalyze your data. You will be:
___able to do the work of other classes, during your class time in Science Research. You should be
reporting to the class and staying in class every assigned period, unless you have permission to go
to the library or see another teacher. This assumes the analysis is occurring at other times.
___ staying in communication as to your progress / issues / questions with me. We should be touching
base with each other at least once every week.
___ keeping accurate, dated records of your analysis / issues. Your log should be electronic and sent
to me each week.
___reflecting upon necessary refinements or redesigns of your project. These issues will be included in
your 5 week logs.
___ 2) prepare your first 5 minute presentation, early in the 2nd quarter. Use the presentation rubric. The
presentation should have 3 or so ppt slides. You should be prepared to answer questions.
