What’s happened?

I have lived in Cincinnati for two years now. My family and I feel like we live in a zoo because we watch many animals all year round. There are squirrels running around trees, a family of deer walking around the town, birds singing in the branches, and in the summertime, many fireflies buzzing around my garden. When I see this wonder, I call my children and say, “Look look…they are so cute.” As much joy as they bring, they also make me feel sad and mad. It makes me sad when I see deer and squirrels that get hit by cars. It makes me mad when the deer eat my beautiful rose blooms in my garden.

One day in the summer when my oldest son and I arrived home, we saw my other son standing in front of our house with my neighbor, Maria. When I got closer, I noticed that a baby deer was on my front porch. I quickly asked, “What’s happened?” Maria said, “Don’t worry, the police has been called.” My son proceeded to tell us that when he arrived home and approached the front porch, he noticed the baby deer lying there. He said he thought it was dead and didn’t want to go near it. At that moment, my neighbor Maria was walking her dog and called to him, “What’s Happened?” After she saw the baby deer, she immediately called the police for help.

After patiently waiting, the police finally arrived and jumped into action. As we watched in awe, the officer put on his gloves and tried to gently scoop up the deer in his arms. When he touched it, it jumped up and ran away at full speed. We were very surprised and smiled with joy. The officer said, “What’s happened?” It startled him as well. We thanked the officer for his help as him and Maria walked away.

At last, we could open our front door and enter our house. My sons and I gathered together and talked about what had just happened. Why was the deer lying on our porch? Will it return? It was a mystery. As I finish writing this story, I look outside and see a family of deer in my yard. I can’t help but think that our little friend has returned. We will be leaving the USA in six months to head back to our home country of Japan. I will miss living in this beautiful, yet mysterious, zoo.
