What’s going on in Physical Education?

According to the Delaware standards for physical education the goal of physical education is to develop physically educated individuals who have the knowledge, skills, and confidence to enjoy a lifetime of healthful physical activity.

Each grade level will learn and develop skills that will allow them to be physically active for life. Listed below are the skills and concepts your son/daughter will perform and demonstrate during the upcoming year.

While participating in physical education class all students are required to wear sneakers, no heels or wedges. Girls should have shorts/leggings under skirts or dresses.

K-2

  • General and self-spatial awareness
  • Locomotor movements (skipping, hopping, jumping, galloping)
  • Non locomotormovemetns (twisting, turning,)
  • Throwing and catching (small and large objects)
  • Pathways and levels
  • Chasing, fleeing and dodging
  • Dance
  • Fitness circuits
  • Team sports (soccer, baseball, basketball) and activities (bowling, kickball, tag)
  • Locate and measure heart rate
  • Demonstrate safe play and sharing
  • Play fair
  • Students will able to interact with classmates and invite others to participate

  • Explain the importance of maintaining a healthy body
  • Game skills and rules (basketball, football, soccer)
  • Engaging in vigorous activity to raise heart rate
  • Dance
  • Physical fitness testing (pacer, push-ups, sit-ups, flexibility)
  • Fitness circuits
  • Work independently and in groups while staying on task.
  • Participate cooperatively in competitive and non-competitive activities
  • Come to class prepared for participation
  • Record resting and active heart rate
  • Apply and demonstrate rules for safe practices for a specific activity

Rules and consequences for good and bad behavior

The rules of the gym are linked to the four components that the students recite in there morning pledge. Practice Kindness: sharing, demonstrating good sportsmanship, working with different groups of students and treating people the way you wanted to be treated. Act Safely: wearing sneakers, no sliding, no gum/candy, moving carefully and using equipment properly. Work responsibility: sharing equipment, following directions, staying on task, taking turns and being cooperative.Show Respect: keep hands and feet to yourself, don’t talk when the teacher or your classmates or talking, respect yourself, others and equipment.

Students are rewarded individually with blue tickets for good behavior and as a class with a class compliment. Both blue tickets and compliments are part of the school wide PBS program that promotes positive behavior.
