What’s Cooking???
How many of you like to eat pizza? How about chocolate chip cookies? We love to eat…but do we love to cook???
In this WebQuest, you will explore your culinary skills! You will learn how to make a solar oven, find recipes, look for food borne illnesses, and explore culinary schools nationwide! Plus we will do some taste testing at the end!!
GET YOUR CHEF’S HAT READY!!!!!
STEP 1
At home we use ovens powered by gas, electricity, or wood (if you have an old wood burning stove). For this WebQuest, you are going to learn how to make an oven that is powered and heated by the SUN!!! The best way is to make one out of a pizza box. Check it out here:
If you would like a challenge, take a look at some other ways to make a solar oven.

STEP 2
Now that you’ve had a chance to check out the solar ovens, it’s time for step 2. What are you going to cook? Have you decided already? Some suggestions already have been pizza and hot dogs. You are free to explore some other foods that might be fun to cook in a solar oven.
ALL RECIPES
COOKS RECIPES.COM
Your recipe needs to be able to serve 6 people. If the recipe you found does not serve 6 people, you need to be able to convert your recipe numbers to a larger recipe or a smaller recipe. Use this site to help you.
MATH IN DAILY LIFE: COOKING BY NUMBERS
*Checking Point
How are you doing? So far you should have:
- Learned how to make a solar oven.
- Picked out a recipe.
Step 3
We all want to taste your creation, but we don’t want to get sick! You need to do a little research on the illness that was assigned to you. Here is a list of all the illnesses assigned.
Hepatitis A
Amebiasis
Staphylococcal food poisoning
Botulism
Listeriosis
Campylobacteriosis
Salmonellosis
Giardiasis
Vibrio infection
Shigellosis
Perfringens food poisoning
Explore at least one of the following websites. You should be able to find out a minimum of 3 interesting facts about your food illness. Be prepared to present them as an informational poster or pamphlet. If you can, find a picture of your bacteria or organism that causes the illness.
FIGHT BAC
FDA / CFSAN FOOD-BORNE ILLNESS
FOOD SAFETY CLEANING TIPS
When presenting your information as a pamphlet or poster, you can use Microsoft Word. All you need to do is organize your information on the page and insert some clip art if you can (or cut and paste a picture of your bacteria into the word document).
It can be just one page and it doesn’t have to be fancy. Just do your best and be creative.
Next…
Visit the following site and create your own puzzle by using the food illness list. You may print it out when you are finished.
STEP 4
What if you wanted to become a chef? (Emeril didn’t teach himself!) There are many culinary schools found in the U.S. Check out the links below and find out where the closest culinary school is and it’s name. Is that where you would go? Or would you rather go to Hawaii to learn to cook? Find a culinary school and tell me
- Name of School
- Tuition for year or semester
- Where it is located
Be prepared to put this information on the back of your illness poster or pamphlet.
