What is the Spirit of Life?

In order to answer this question, we actually have several terms to define like what is a spirit? Then, what is life and what is the difference between a spirit and a soul? What is a body?

Upon this research, it was clear to me that there were biblical definitions and scientific definitions. So, after much material that I collected, I decided to use both scientific and biblical answers, therefore you the audience, can discern for yourself.

So let’s start with question what is a spirit?

The King James Version – (The Bile Dictionary) defines spirit, which comes from the Latin word spiritus or sprio – which means “to breathe”.

Other dictionary definitions include:

Spirit, (for which is a noun meaning) – The vital principle or animating force within living things.

The hyponym of spirit (hyponym is a word whose meaning includes the meanings of other words) includes: psyche, and soul.

Through this research I have realized that I can not address the word spirit without addressing the word soul and body. The soul and the spirit seem to be two different things, and the difference between them is explained in the bible.

However there are three parts to man – Body, Soul and Spirit

  1. The Body – is Geek for “soma” – which is the entire material or physical structure of a human being – it’s the physical part of a person.
  2. The Soul – is Greek for “psyche” – Genesis 2:7 states that Man was created as a “living soul”. The soul consists of the mind (which includes the conscience), the will and the emotions. The soul and the spirit are mysteriously tied together and make up what the Scriptures call the "heart." We see here that the "heart" is central to our emotions and will.
  3. The Spirit – is Greek meaning “Pneuma”- meaning ”to breathe”. So spirit IS the Breath of Life”. Another definition of the word spirit - the mind controlled by the sprit is life and peace.

Therefore, as human beings, we live eternally as a spirit – (we breathe), we have a soul – (our minds, will and emotions), and we dwell in a body – (which is a physical structure for housing the spirit and the soul).

Some people think that “spirit” is just another word for “soul.” However, that is not the case. The Bible makes clear that “spirit” and “soul” refer to two different things. Human beings have a spirit, but we are not spirits. The body needs the spirit in much the same way a radio needs electricity—in order to function.

To illustrate this further, think of a portable radio. When you put batteries in a portable radioand turn it on, the electricity stored in the batteries brings the radio to life, so to speak. Without batteries, however, the radio is dead. Similarly, the spirit is the force that brings our body to life.

Like electricity, the spirit has no feeling and cannot think. It is an impersonal force. But without that spirit, or life-force, our bodies “die and return to the dust” as the bible states.

When you examine the way “soul” or “souls” is used in the Bible, it becomes evident that this word basically refers to people, animals, orthe life that aperson or an animal has. Unlike human beings havinga spirit, human beings aresouls. In its most basic sense, the word “soul” means “life.” Whenever the word “soul” is used, it can refer to the whole person.

The soul and the spirit are connected, but separable. The soul is the essence of humanity’s being; it is who we are. This entails life, feeling, thought, and action in humans regarded as a distinct entity separate from the body, and commonly held to be separable in existence from the body. This tells us that the difference between a spirit and a soul is that a soul can die and a spirit lives forever.

Now, let’s define the meaning of life.

In general, it pertains to the significance of living or existence. So, life must have a purpose, and we must have an identity. I believe everyone has their own meaning or perception of what life is.

  • What does it mean to you?
  • Does anyone know the true meaning of life?

A dictionary term defines life as:

  1. Theproperty or qualitythatdistinguisheslivingorganismsfromdeadorganismsandinanimatematter, manifested in functionssuch as metabolism, growth, reproduction, andresponse to stimuli or adaptation to theenvironmentoriginatingfromwithintheorganism.
  2. A livingbeing,especially a person.

In order to address what the meaning of life is, we may ask questions such as:

  • Who am I?
  • Why am I here?
  • What is the origin of life?
  • What is my purpose in life?
  • What is the value of life?
  • What are we living for?

I am sure you can add many more questions to this list.

In my opinion as I have gathered these facts, I now have to ask, what does life mean to you? This is a trick question, isn’t it? Especially since the meaning of life is not the same for everyone. Life is what you make it out to be. “YOU” are the one giving meaning to your life.

  • Are you living life to its fullest?
  • Or, are you just simply surviving?

Here is the way I see life – (and yes, this is my own opinion, every person is allowed to live their life as they choose to. So, find the way you want to live your life and live it that way!

Be happy! Be healthy! Be Joyful! Be Loved!

Make the best of things while you're still here on this planet, and in this lifetime. If your life needs meaning, then join a cause, if your life is sad, do whatever it takes to learn to be happy. If you are NOT living the life you want – what are you doing to turn that around? No one ever said life was going to be easy, but if things are not going as planned – then DO SOMETHING about it! Even a wrong decision is DOING SOMETHING!

I now ask again, what is the Spirit of Life?

The Spirit of Life is the “Life-giving-breath” of an individual,(just like the energy of a battery that plays the radio) and “you” - the soul – who has a mind, will and emotions, who also has a bodyto house the spirit and the soul.

So why not “Breathe”knowledgeinto your life to obtain abundance, peace, joy, and confidence so that you can be the best that you can be?

When you obtain the knowledge to change your life, are you not living the Spirit of life? The knowledge being the “breath” is the power to change.
