What is the SAS Cassal Bursary?

This Master’s Bursary, made available by the Cassal Endowment Fund, is designed to support a student wishing to pursue a master’s course at the School of Advanced Study, and who intends to write their dissertation on a topic related to French or Francophone studies. Within the School’s institutes there is scope for undertaking interdisciplinary research with a French or Francophone focus in areas of specialisation such as the visual arts, history, contemporary literature, theatre and performance, the Caribbean, refugee law. All MA, MRes and LLM degrees offered by the School are eligible for the bursary.

The scholarship provides the successful applicant with a fixed amount of £7,500 (in the case of part-time spread across two years of study) to be used firstly to waive the fees; the remaining sum, if any, will be awarded to the student. In 2018-19 it is expected that two bursaries will be awarded.

Eligibility

The primary criterion on which applications are judged is academic merit. The successful applicant will be of exceptional quality, evidenced by previous academic achievement at undergraduate level, with an outstanding mark achieved in the final-year project/dissertation. Successful applicants will have a genuine and demonstrable interest in undertaking a master’s degree at the School of Advanced Study. Awards are open to students who are:

-self-funded and domiciled in the UK, European Union (EU) or overseas;

-studying full-time or part-time for a maximum of two years;

-intending to write their dissertation on a topic related to French or Francophone studies.

How to apply? Applicants must have:

-submitted a complete application to undertake a postgraduate taught programme at the School;
