Oral Word to Word Matching

  • Definition: Matching words with same initial phonemes
  • Examples:
  • “Do kite and kitten begin with the same sound?”
  • “Which words begin with the same sound?” (can, big, tell, bike)

Oral Rhyming

  • Definition: Recognizing words that rhyme
  • Examples:
  • “What is another word that rhymes with big and dig?”
  • Complete the rhyme: “I saw a cat with a purple ____ .”(hat)
  • “Which word does not rhyme with the others? (high, low, my).”

Oral Alliteration

  • Definition: Text with multiple words with the same initial sound
  • Example: “Sally sells seashells at the sea shore.”

Oral Blending

  • Syllables
  • Definition: The word created when combining syllables
  • Example: “Listen to these word parts; Say the word as a whole. Bas – ket = what is the word?” Basket!
  • Onset/Rime
  • Definition: The word created by combining an onset with a rime.
  • Example: “Listen to these word parts; Put the two parts together to make a word. /d/ …og What word is it?” Dog!

Oral Phoneme Deletion

  • Syllable
  • Definition: The word part left when you remove the first syllable
  • Example: “ Say cracker without the cra.” (cker)
  • Initial Sound
  • Definition: The word part that is left when you remove the initial sound
  • Example: “What word would we have left if the /b/ is taken off of bat?” (at)
  • Final Sound
  • Definition: The word part left when you remove the final sound
  • Example: “Say dip without the /p/” (di)
  • Initial phoneme in a blend
  • Definition: The word part left when you remove the first sound in an initial blend
  • Example: “Say nest without the /t/.” (nes)
  • Second phoneme in a blend
  • Definition: The word part left when you remove the second sound in an initial blend
  • Example: “Say truck without the /r/.” (tuck)

Oral Isolation

  • Definition: The sound you hear at the beginning, middle, and ending sounds in spoken words
  • Examples:
  • “What is the first sound you hear in the word rope?” (r)
  • “What sound do you hear in the middle of the word happy? (p)
  • “What sound do you hear at the end of the word rat?” (t)

Oral Segmentation

  • Syllables
  • Segmenting words into syllables
  • Example: “Say the word turkey syllable by syllable.” (tur…key)
  • Onset/Rime
  • Definition: Segmenting the onset (first sound) from the remainder of the word (rime)
  • Example: “Listen as I say the word back. Say the first sound in the word and then the rest of the word.” (/b/...ack)
  • Phoneme by phoneme
  • Definition: Breaking down the individual sounds after hearing the word.
  • Example: “Say the sounds you hear in the word pan. How many sounds did you hear?” (/p/ /a/ /n/) (3)

Phoneme Counting without print

  • Counting the phonemes heard in spoken words
  • Example: “How many sounds do you hear in the word fat? (3)

Oral Sound to Word Matching

  • Definition: Identifying a specific sound within a word
  • Example: “Is there an /l/ in the word clock?”

Oral Phoneme Substitution

  • Initial Sound Substitution
  • Definition: Substituting the initial phoneme with another phoneme
  • Example: “Change the first sound in the word cat to a /b/. What word do you have?” (bat)
  • Final Sound Substitution
  • Definition: Substituting the final phoneme with another phoneme
  • Example: “Change the last sound in the word bike to a /t/. What word do you have?” (bite)
  • Oral Vowel Substitution
  • Definition: Replace the middle sound in the word hat with /o/. What word do you have?” (hot)

Oddity Tasks

  • Initial Consonants:
  • Example: “Which two words begin with thee same sound?” (pat, ten, tie)
  • Final Consonants:
  • Example: “Which two words end with the same sound?” (can, top, den)
  • Medial Long Vowels:
