What is Cooperative Education?

The cooperative education program provides an opportunity for the student to gain work experience orinternship experience in a field related to his/her career goals. The student is released from school to continue his/her learning at a pre-approvedwork site placement.

Who is eligible to participate?

Anyjunior in good academic standing is eligible to apply for participation in the co-op program during his/her senior year. Acceptance into the program is partially based on attendance, discipline, and academic history, as the student will be representing CentralDauphinSchool District in the community.

What is the application process?

During the junior year, the student must inform the guidance counselor of his/her interest in co-op through the course selection process. He/she will then be requested to complete an application. Students who are eligible for the program will be notified and interviewed by the co-op coordinator.

Does the co-op experience help meet graduation requirements?

A student can earn one to three elective credits through the co-op program. The out-of-school experience may be used to meet part of the six major subjects required of seniors.

Related Work Experience

The cooperative related work experience program is available to senior students who wish to participate in career-related paid on-the-job-training experience on a daily basis. Students planning to enter the job market immediately following graduation can learn entry level skills through supervised job training. Students must obtain work site placements that will enable them to acquire meaningful career related experiences in an atmosphere conducive to learning.


Related Internship Experience

The cooperative related internship experience program is available to senior students who wish to participate in career-related, paid or non-paid, on-the-job-training experience on a daily basis. College bound students intending to invest large sums of time and money into a specialized field of learning can gain practical experience to help insure that the investment is a wise one. Students must obtain work site placements that will enable them to acquire meaningful career related experiences in an atmosphere conducive to learning.

The Student Can Expect …

-to be provided assistance in finding a work siterelated to his/her career goals, which abides by child labor laws and practices good safety procedures

-to gain experience during released school time while working a minimum of 15 hours per week Monday-Friday

-to arrange own transportation

-to develop employability skills

-to discover job market opportunities

-to be evaluated quarterly by the work site supervisor, as well as by the co-op coordinator; evaluations will be combined to obtain a quarterly grade

-follow program policy & procedure

-adhereto a written training plan developed by the work site supervisor, which outlines job performance and expectations

-complete related projects as assigned by the co-op coordinator

-consider on-the-job success as important as in-school success

-represent CentralDauphinSchool District in a positive manner
