What is a School Advisory Council or SAC?

A school advisory council is a legally recognized body composed of the principal and representatives of teachers and support staff, students, parents, and community members who work together in an advisory capacity to increase the quality of education being provided by the school. The fundamental purpose of the school advisory council is to ensure that all students receive the best possible learning opportunities by engaging all partners in an ongoing process of problem solving and shared decision making.

Who is on the School Advisory Council (SAC)?

A school advisory council for a public school shall have at least five and not more than eighteen members consisting of:

  • at least one parent of a child attending the school
  • at least one person from the teachers employed at theschool
  • at least one person from the support staff employed at the school
  • the principal / vice principal of the school
  • at least one representative of the community in which

the school is situated

A School Advisory Council shall not have more than one third of itsmembers from any one group listed above.

A person shall not be a member of a School Advisory Counciland a member of a school board for the school district or school region in which theschool is situate.A principal is a non-voting member of a School AdvisoryCouncil.A vacancy on a school advisory council does not impair the authority of the remaining members to act.

How often does the School Advisory Council (SAC) meet?

The School Advisory Council (SAC) meets six times a year in the last week of each month (or dates that work best for all members) or when selected by the council. The meetings are one hour in length.

What are the duties of the School Advisory Council (SAC)?

A school advisory council for a public school shall:

  • after consultation with the principal of the school, have an awareness and understanding of the school’s Student Support Plan goals
  • advise on the development of school board policies that promote
  • advise the principal and staff of the school practices, student discipline, and parent-school communication and similar matters
  • be aware ofwhere to locate information regarding curriculum and programs, student-support services, policy development, funding, communication strategies and similar matters
  • give input to the school administration supervisor when a new principal of the school is being selected
