The Hartland Land Trust officially became incorporated on October 26, 2006. The Land Trust is a volunteer run, nonprofit, service organization. Our mission is: “To endeavor to maintain the rural character of our area for present and future generations by protecting its diverse natural resources through the conservation and management of significant lands. Engaging in and promoting the scientific study of and education regarding natural resources; and using all properties held or controlled by the Land Trust and the net earnings thereof for the benefit of the general public and for charitable, educational, recreational, conservation, scientific and historical purposes.”

What is a Land Trust?

Land Trusts are organizations directly involved in protecting land for its natural, recreational, scenic,

historical, or agricultural value. Land Trusts may purchase or accept donations of land or of conservation easements (permanent binding agreements that restrict the uses of a piece of land to protect its conservation resources), manage land owned by others, or advise landowners on how to preserve their land.

Why was it organized?

As a response to the people of Hartland who through the ten-year Conservation and Development survey made clear their desire to have the Town retain its natural charm and rural character.

How can it help you?

The conservation of open land enhances the value of neighboring private properties and increases the value of the entire community as well. The Land Trust makes it possible for you to serve our mutual goals of conservation through tax-deductible gifts of either land, money, or securities. We are available to assist you to ensure that your decisions for the future use of your land are prudently implemented.

How can it help the Town?

The need to preserve open land in a growing community must be anticipated and addressed far in advance of any possible burgeoning growth. Experience shows that the income from taxes that a growing town generates is far less than the costs of services required for increased development.

In the long term, fewer Town services will be required thus having a restraining effect on taxes.

The Hartland Land Trust meets from 7-9 P.M. on the fourth Monday of each month in the Hartland Room at Town Hall. We encourage public participation at our meetings and would welcome the opportunity to discuss your thoughts and concerns.
