What is a Fairtrade Borough?
A Fairtrade borough is one where the importance of fair trade is recognised, and the local authority, groups and individuals are committed to supporting and promoting fair trade.
In order to make Enfield a Fairtrade Borough:
Enfield Council have adopted a Fairtrade policy, and agreed to use Fairtrade tea and coffee at Council Meetings, Committee Meetings etc.
A certain number of retail outlets had to be found selling at least 2 Fairtrade products each, and a number of cafes, restaurants and local businesses serving Fairtrade tea and coffee
There must be a Fairtrade Steering Group, and publicity must be generate.d
We have met all of these conditions, and Enfield was declared a Fairtrade Borough in September 2008.
That doesn’t mean the campaign is over, though – we have to maintain our status, and anyway the real campaign is to do our bit to help poor farmers out of poverty
What can you do?
Buy at least one Fairtrade product regularly – and why not more than one?
Introduce Fairtrade products to friends, colleagues and workmates

e-mail: / What is Fair Trade?
Fair Trade provides a way for consumers to show their commitment to a fairer world, and enables producers to satisfy their basic needs.
Fair Trade works by:
Paying fair prices to the producers and enabling consumers in rich countries to buy their products.
Supporting producer organisations in social development projects, e.g. health and educational provision.
Campaigning to highlight the unequal system of world trade which places profit above basic needs and human rights.
Insisting on acceptable working conditions.
Encouraging environmental responsibility.

WE ALL WANT FAIR TRADE / What next?
More of the same! The campaign is really about raising awareness of
what Fairtrade can do for the poor. Being a Fairtrade Borough means
that lots of people in Enfield already are aware of that, but many still are not.
WE NEED TO BUILD ON WHAT WE HAVE ALREADY ACHIEVED, LETTING EVERYONE KNOW ABOUT FAIRTRADE AND DRIVING UP SALES OF FAIRTRADE PRODUCTS!
