WELCOMING EVENTS FOR GRADUATE FRESHERS

(2017/18)

Following are the times, locations and details of various events that will be taking place from week Minus 1 onwards to help you to settle in. The majority of these events are organised by the MCR Committee with some of them being free. The events in italics are those where all freshers are expected to attend, all other events are optional. (For an explanation of the numbering of the weeks of term please see the College Student Handbook.)

There may be changes to the programme of events; if so these will be communicated to you as they happen. Things will be explained in greater detail by the MCR Committee members (see the MCR President’s letter for contact details). There may be a variety of events not included in this timetable, keep a look out for information on the noticeboards around College.

Please note that Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner will be served in Hall from Monday 2ndOctober, the first Formal Hall of term is on Sunday 8th October. Non-alcoholic drinks will be available at all college events.

the MCR / Trip to ‘Thirsty Meeples’ – a night out at the much-loved board games café at Gloucester Green, directly over the road from Worcester
Wednesday 27th September

7.00pm / Meet at the MCR / Jericho Pub Trip – A chance to meet new arrivals and get to
know our amazing local area, Jericho.
Thursday 28th September
9.30am – 5.00pm / Exam Schools, High Street / For European and International Students on Social Sciencesprogrammesonly – University Graduate Orientation Programme. Registration by 16th September is essential; please refer to the Orientation Events sheetprovided in the Freshers’ Information.
9.30am andCollege College library inductions for new graduate students - please 10.00am and Library bring your College access card and University card. (Separate
10.30am induction for Law graduates on 3rd October.)
12.00pm – 5.00pm / Exam Schools, High Street / For all European and International Students – Information Fair (banks will be present to assist in opening UK bank accounts)
8.00pm / Meet at MCR / Ghost Tour – a walking tour is a rite of passage in this haunted, historic town.
Friday 29th September
9.30am – 5.00pm / Exam Schools, High Street / For European and International Students on Humanities,Medical Sciences and Maths, Physical and Life Sciences programmes only – University Graduate Orientation Programme. Registration by 16th September is essential; please refer to the Orientation Events sheet provided in the Freshers’ Information.
12.00pm – 5.00pm / Exam Schools, High Street / For all European and International Students – Information Fair (banks will be present to assist in opening UK bank accounts)
2.00pm / Meet at MCR / Tour of College
9.00pm / MCR / Inaugural Bar Night – Come and meet MCR members old and new! Friday is our MCR bar night throughout the term. For non-drinkers there is a plentiful supply of non-alcoholic drinks.
Saturday 30th September
3.00pm MCR Movies and Chill – Come for some relaxing company between
the evening events’ shenanigans
8.00pm – 12.00am MCR Wine & Cheese evening – Get a taste of what’s to come later
in the term with one of our favourite events. Wine, cheese,
snacks (and full non-alcoholic options) will be provided.
“0th WEEK”
Gym – Any students wanting to use the College gym must first attend an induction session. Induction sessions will be held at the following times:
Monday 10th October 4.00pm – 6.00pm Thursday 13th October 6.45pm – 8.45pm
Monday 17th October 5.00pm – 7.00pm Thursday 20th October 5.00pm – 7.00pm
Places on the induction sessions must be booked in advance by signing up on the sheets that will be put on a noticeboard at the bottom of Staircase 6 on 0th week. Please note that there will not be any other opportunities to attend induction sessions, so anyone wishing to use the College gym must sign up for, and attend, one of the above sessions.
Sunday 1stOctober
11.30am / MCR / First Big Sunday Brunch – a much-loved favourite which we’ll
be hosting throughout the term.
1.00pm / Leave from MCR / Scenic walk through Port Meadow to the much-loved Perch pub
9.00pm / MCR TV room / ‘Sleepover’ night. Dressed-down night in with tea, ice cream and brownies. A fun chance to meet the welfare reps and learn about the support services that are available as and when you might need them throughout the year.
Monday 2ndOctober
9.00am – 5.00pm / You may be required to attend Departmental/Faculty Induction Events during this time – you will be notified by your Department or Faculty if this is the case.
10.00am – 1.00pm / Exam Schools, High Street / For all European and International Students - Spouses and partners orientation event. To sign up or for further information e-mail

High Street / If you are a non-UK student and missed the graduate orientation programmes you may attend the information fair (but not the lectures) at the Undergraduate Orientation Programme
3.00pm / Meet in Cloisters / Tour of Worcester College Gardens. Learn about the renowned Worcester gardens with a tour led by the head gardener.
9.00pm – 12.00am / College Bar / Ceilidh (popular introduction to Scottish dancing and the best ice-breaker there is, no experience required!)
Tuesday 3rd October
9.00am – 5.00pm and evening / You may be required to attend Departmental/Faculty Induction Events during this time – you will be notified by your Department or Faculty if this is the case.

Wednesday 4th October
10.00am / Meet at the MCR / Insiders’ tour of Oxford – a fun trip around some of our favourite haunts. A chance to get to know some great cafes and coffee shops for study or meeting friends.
8.00pm / Meet at the MCR / Three-legged pub crawl
Thursday 5th October
10.00am –11.00am / Exam Schools, High Street / University Freshers’ Fair – for information see (tickets available from the MCR President)
11.30am (tea/coffee served from 11.15am) / Sultan Nazrin Shah Centre / Introductory session with key members of the College. All freshers are expected to attend
1.00pm – 6.00pm / You may be required to attend Departmental/Faculty Induction Events during this time – you will be notified by your Department or Faculty if this is the case.
8.00pm / MCR / Live Music Night
Friday 6thOctober

2.30pm – 3.30pm / Sultan Nazrin Shah Centre / College Fire Safety Training for all new graduate students
3.30pm / MCR / Compulsory consent workshop, run by the MCR
9.00pm / MCR / Sangria Night! – (and maybe a trip to our club fave, Fever)
Saturday 7th October
To be confirmed / To be confirmed / OUSU mature students orientation event (for those over 25 years of age)
10.00am–12.00pm / Sultan Nazrin Shah Centre / College Freshers’ Fair
5.00pm / Chapel / Open rehearsal and Evensong for those interested in joining the College Choir
6.30pm – 7.15pm / MCR / Champagne reception, find your friends and head over with them to hall
7.15pm / Hall / Graduate Freshers’ Gala dinner - A black-tie formal, and a chance to enjoy the superb atmosphere of hall before its renovation. Book early to avoid disappointment.
9.00pm – 12.00am / College Bar / JCR Bop. The big first party of term, where we join with the undergraduate community. The theme is traditionallyPink and Black, so dress yourselves in College colours in full Worcester spirit

8.30pm / MCR / Graduate Pub Quiz – hosted by your very own MCR committee
Thursday 12th October
6.30pm onwards / To be advised / Drinks with College Adviser (locations to be advised)
Followed by
7.30pm / Hall / Graduate Freshers’ Dinner (you will receive more information about this and an invitation once you have arrived at Oxford)
Friday 13th October
3.00pm - 5.00pm / Exam Schools,
High Street / Late drop-in orientation sessions for non-UK students who were not able to attend the formal orientation programme
Saturday 14th October
8.00am sharp / Linbury Building / Matriculation (formal admission to the University of Oxford) – assemble in the Linbury Building wearing “subfusc” clothing with gown and cap (see the College Student Handbook). The Dean of Degrees (Dr J. S. Scullion) will take you to the Matriculation Ceremony. The Freshers’ photograph will be taken in College before you depart.
NB: the following people do not matriculate:
-Visiting students from outside the EU; and
-Anyone who has already matriculated at Oxford (eg. as an undergraduate)
NOTE: Anyone who has graduated from Cambridge University or Trinity College Dublin can become a member of the University of Oxford by having their previous degree incorporated instead of matriculating. Unless incorporation is requested the College will matriculate students from Cambridge University and Trinity College Dublin.
