InstructionsA1
Welcome to this experiment on decision making.
Please do not talk during the experiment. Decisions are to be made individually, in private.
In this experiment, you have been randomly matched with another subject in the other room. Each of you has been given £6. The other person does not have a decision to make - what happens depends on you alone. You can either leave payments unchanged, increase your own, by decreasing the other person’s payment, or decrease your own, increasing the other person’s payment.
If you decrease your own payment, this increases the other person’s payment by twice as much. So, for example, if you decrease your own by £1, leaving £5 for yourself, the other person would receive £2 more, so £8 in total. If you increase your own payment, this decreases the other person’s payment by twice as much. So, for example, if you increase your payment by £1, this decreases the other person’s payment by £2; you would get £7 and they would get £4. The possible final payments are given in the table below:
your payment (£) / 8 / 7.67 / 7.33 / 7 / 6.67 / 6.33 / 6 / 5.67 / 5.33 / 5 / 4.67 / 4.33 / 4 / 3.67 / 3.33 / 3 / 2.67 / 2.33 / 2other’s
payment (£) / 2 / 2.67 / 3.33 / 4 / 4.67 / 5.33 / 6 / 6.67 / 7.33 / 8 / 8.67 / 9.33 / 10 / 10.67 / 11.33 / 12 / 12.67 / 13.33 / 14
Anonymity
Your identity will not be revealed to the other person. The person who collects your decision does not know about the consequences for the other person you are matched with. They have simply been instructed to pay you the amount circled on the back of this sheet. Another person will pay the subjects in the other room, but they will not know who has done what, nor how the payments were generated. You will be asked to sign a receipt for the amount, but this is only for accounting purposes and the receipts from both rooms will be combined. If you wish to maintain strict anonymity, all you have to do is sign the receipt illegibly.
To make your decision
Choose a number from the first row of the table, and circle the same number on the table overleaf. You will be paid that amount, and the other person will be paid the amount below that, in the second row. In addition to these amounts, both of you will be given £2 extra as a show-up fee.

Instructions
Welcome to this experiment on decision making. Please do not talk during the experiment. Decisions are to be made individually, in private.
In this experiment, you have been randomly matched with another subject in the other room (A40). Both of you have been given £4 initially. In addition to these amounts, you have been given a second payment of £7, but the other person nothing. The other person does not have a decision to make - what happens depends on you alone. You can either leave these second payments unchanged, increase your own by decreasing the other person’s payment, or decrease your own, increasing the other person’s payment.
If you decrease your second payment, this increases the other person’s by the same amount. So, for example, if you decrease your own by £1, leaving £6 second payment for yourself, the other person will receive £1 more. If you increase your own, this decreases the other person’s payment by the same amount. So, for example, if you increase your payment by £1, you will get £8 second payment and they will receive
£-1 (that is, they will have £1 deducted from their initial £4). The possible second payments are given in the table below:
Action / A / B / C / D / E / F / G / H / I / J / K / L / M / N / O / P / Q / R / SYour 2nd payment (£) / 9.00 / 8.50 / 8.00 / 7.50 / 7.00 / 6.50 / 6.00 / 5.50 / 5.00 / 4.50 / 4.00 / 3.50 / 3.00 / 2.50 / 2.00 / 1.50 / 1.00 / 0.50 / 0.00

Your identity will not be revealed to the other person. The person who collects your decision does not know about the consequences for the other person you are matched with. They have simply been instructed to pay you an amount depending on which action is circled on your “outcome” sheet. Another person will pay the subjects in the other room, but that assistant will not know who has done what, nor how the payments were generated. You will be asked to sign a receipt for your payment, but this is only for accounting purposes and the receipts from both rooms will be combined. If you wish to maintain strict anonymity, all you have to do is sign the receipt illegibly.
To make your decision
Choose a letter from the first row of the table, and circle the same letter on the “outcome” sheet. You will be paid the initial £4 and the selected second payment, which also determines the amounts paid to the other person in the same way.
