Introductory course before the programme starts

During the week before the programme starts, you have the opportunity to participate in an introductory course. During that course we will provide you with important information about the programme and you will have the opportunity to get to know your fellow programme students. For the introductory course you will need to bring <clothes, special material etc>.In order for us to plan the introductory course, we will call you some time during the dates December 28-29 to get your reply on whether or not you wish to participate. If you are unable to answer the phone during that period, you can leave a message through someone at home or contact us in advance. If you have already made up your mind, we would be grateful if you would letus know as soon as possible (at the same time, let us know if you need any special diet).You will find our contact informationat the end of this letter.[MM1]

Course/programme registration

The course/programme starts off with registration and introduction. You need to be registered for the course in the study documentation system in order to be able to follow the course and to get your results registered during the course. If you are unable to attend during the registration and introduction, you need to contact the course/programme coordinator/study counselor in advance, or else you risk losing your place (seat) at the course/programme.

Online registration for the course/programme

In order to start your studies at the course/programme, you need to register for it in Portalen. You need to be registered for the course in the study documentation system to be able to follow the course and to get your results recorded during the course.

To be able to sign in to Portalen and register online, you need to have activated your CAS user account (see below for more information).[MM3]

Online registration through Cambro/Moodle/name of other learning platform/systemfor the course/programme

In order to start your studies at the course/programme, you need to register for it in Cambro/Moodle/other learning platform. You will receive a course key and further instructions in a separate letter that will be sent to your civic address and/or the email address that you have stated at Universityadmissions.se.

Online registration is open between the xx and yy of September/January.It is important that you sign in to Cambro/Moodle/other platform and register during that time period, or otherwise you risk losing your place (seat) at the course/programme.

Meetings during the course

This is a distance education course, which means that you will conduct most of your studies on your own and will find teacher support and work material for the course in the learning platform. It also includes five weekend meetings in Umeå when you will conduct all practical parts of the course. You need to have fulfilled all the practical parts in order to complete the course, which means that participation in these meetings in Umeå is compulsory.

Systems and IT services for students

As a student at Umeå University you will get access to a number of systems and IT services. In the student portal system, Portalen, you will get access to personal services, such as the student e-mail and your study results. Cambro is another system, used as a learning platform for many university courses. You will find more information about these at

As a new student, you need to activate your user accountto get access to these services. If you are an exchange student you will receive information on arrival about how to activate your account.

If you are not an exchange student, have a Swedish civic registration number and have applied to Umeå University through Universityadmissions.se, you can use your user identity on Universityadmissions.se to activate your user account. This way to activate your account will be available from the first week of August/first week of January.

If you don´t have a Swedish civic registration number, you can request for a temporary identity that you can use to activate your user account at Umeå University. Find more information on

Students at Umeå University will receive a UmU card which is a multifunction card which allows access to buildings, university library card, as well as a copying and printing card. Material for your coming studies

The course schedule for the introductory course and the starting course in the programme, together with course syllabus and literature list, are available at (example; choose relevant link).In that page you will also find links to more information about the department and the course/programme.

In this course, we use the learning platform Cambro/Moodle/other platform. There you will find for example course schedule, instructions for exercises during the course and messages from the teachers. Examination tasks will be published there, and when you have written an examination you shall upload it to the platform.In order to get access to the learning platform, you sign in using your CAS user identity/other identity that we will send to you in a separate letter/e-mail. Not only books at Umeå University Library

As a student, you have access to the University Library, the Medical Library and UB Arts Campus and all of their resources such as textbooks, journals, databases, search help and study rooms. On the University Library is also Academic Resource Centre that provides help on writing and study skills. More information can be found at:

Orientation Course

We strongly recommend that you take part in the Orientation Course, which is open for all international students. The Orientation Course will give you the opportunity to get acquainted with Umeå and Umeå University. It is also a great opportunity to make friends with other international students. The schedule for the coming term will be available on the site below one month before the beginning of the term. There may be last minute changes to the schedule, so you should check for updates before you leave home or when you get to Umeå.

Buddy Programme

The Buddy Programme is an opportunity for you to get in contact with Swedish culture and traditions and meet Swedish and other international students during your stay in Umeå. Buddies are Swedish students who volunteer to introduce you to the Swedish way of life. As a participant in the Buddy Programme, you will be part of a buddy group that consists of buddies and international students. The Buddy Programme will give you the opportunity to participate in a variety of activities, for example, sports, parties and travel.

On Thursday 1 September at 10 am to 2.30 pm, you are warmly invited to attend Umeå University's Welcome Fair at the Universum building in the heart of Campus Umeå.
