I Round. Let's start our first round.

I'm going to read out four well-known expressions. So, your first one will be 'as green as...' and say 'grass'. As green as grass. Is that clear?

4. Our fourth task is connected with proverbs. It's sometimes impossible to understand people if you don't know the proverbs because their meaning is sometimes different from the meaning of every separate word.

II Round. We play with words.

2. The task is to write as many words beginning with the letter L as possible.
Time - 1 min.

For example: light, lamp, library...

3.1 feel you're tired of sitting. The next task is for very creative people.

I mean pupils who love art. But you will be drawing your picture without looking at it. Your friend will be your eyes. Please, draw a portrait of an ideal pupil.

III Round.

I think each of you would like to go to Britain.

Imagine that you are preparing for such a trip. English people have the reputation of being

very reserved.

Sometimes, it's good starting complimenting to break the ice.

1.  In this round we will check your ability to compliment.

2.  British people are patriots of their country. They would be pleased if you know a lot
about their country.

It would be a good idea to check yoifr knowledge of Britain.

I'd love you to recollect some British superlatives. I mean... the longest, largest, highest...

1.  What is the longest river in Britain? (the Severn)

2.  What is the highest mountain? (Ben Nevis)

3.  What is the largest county? (Yorkshire)

4.  What is the largest lake? (Lough Neogh)

5.  Why is the district in the centre of England called the Black County?
(It's called black because of the dust from coal. Coal and iron ore are natural resources of the country).

6.  What is the name of the capital of Scotland? (Edinburgh)

7.  What is the name of the capital of Wales? (Cardiff)

8.  The national emblem of Scotland is the thistle. Why was it adopted?
(In 1263 a Norwegian army invaded Scotland and made a surprise night
attack on the Scottish army. The Scots didn 't expect the attack and the
Norwegians were sure they would win. But suddenly one of the barefooted
Norwegians stepped on a thistle and cried out in pain. The Scots were roused
and the result of the battle was the victory of the Scots. In memory of this the
Scots adopted the thistle as their national emblem).

9.  In what British lake is a monster supposed to live? (Lock ness)

10. At what age do English boys and girls begin going to school?

3. You gave brilliant answers and showed that you know a lot about Great Britain.

Every language has special expressions called idioms.

Now you have to understand English idioms.

Choose money idioms or travel idioms.

Money idioms:

1.  not have two pennies to rub together.

2.  to pinch pennies.

3.  to cost a pretty penny.

4.  in for a penny, in for a pound.
Travel idioms:

1.  to be just the ticket.

2.  the end of the road.

3.  go your own way.

4.  be a one-way ticket to something.

IV Round.

Look at the board. You see notes and hearts.

This means that there are two categories of questions. If you choose notes, the questions are about music. If you choose hearts, the questions are about love. What do you choose?
