Welcome to Math. Our classroom is often loud, a bit chaotic, hopefully fun and definitely educational.
A Typical Math Day
- Most days begin with an opening math exercise. Each opener is designed so students get additional practice of basic math facts or additional practice of current content.
- A review from the previous day’s lesson if necessary.
- New content. Students will work individually, in pairs, and in small groups. Students will have numerous opportunities during the week to work collaboratively with their peers.
- Homework is given and intended as a reinforcement of the daily lessons.
Classes utilize bi-directional questioning. Students are encouraged to ask, and answer, questions. It is my goal to call on each student at least once every class. Students have many opportunities to shine.
Students are encouraged to take notes and study guides are provided for some of the material. My website has relevant documents posted.
Student Expectations:
- The students should bring their Math Binder, a pencil/pen, completed assignments, a calculator, and their Math Textbook to class, unless told otherwise.
- Students should have their homework completed prior to class.
3.Late work will be accepted at 1/2 credit up till the assessment. Use Progress Book to check for missing/late assignments.
Curriculum – 6th grade covers a wide variety of topics including numeration, basic geometry concepts, measurement concepts, data analysis, fractions, percents, decimals, and probability.
Assessment-Students are assessed regularly. Assessment is not judged solely by formal means (quizzes/tests). Homework and in class work is also used for assessment.
Students are given advance notice of any quizzes/tests. Tests consist of multiple-choice, fill in the blank, short answer, extended response, and other question forms.

Homework/Classwork - 30%
TIPS FOR SUCCESS:
1. Have your child practice basic math facts until they are confident. A confident math student enjoys math. A strong foundation in the basics makes learning advanced concepts much, much easier. Topics to practice until mastery include:
A. Addition
B. Subtraction
C. Multiplication – STUDENTS SHOULD MEMORIZE THE TIMES TABLES UP THROUGH 9. THIS WILL MAKE THEIR MATH LIFE MUCH EASIER.
D. Division – using long division is preferable.
E. Addition, subtraction, multiplication, division of fractions.
F. Addition, subtraction, multiplication, division of decimals.
2. Spend just a few minutes each night on basics until they can “do it in their sleep”.
RESOURCES FOR SUCCESS:
