/ We share a unique career …

Dear Staff:

Welcome to HEAD START of Greater Dallas’ 2009 Pre-Service Training Conference: Head Start Meeting the Challenges of Our Community and Our Nation! Please join us in our opportunity to serve over four thousand children and their families. We share a unique career where we have the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of young children and their families. Let’s look forward to our goal of fulfilling this obligation and feeling the satisfaction it brings.

Many challenges face Head Start of Greater Dallas and the nation. The first is the flat funding that the program has experienced over recent years. The agency continues to work hard to ensure that this does not hamper any day-to-day center operations. We appreciate your patience during these trying times. All of us hope the economy has started its journey on the road to recovery. We also call upon you to help generate and continue to enter nonfederal in our database system. Let’s call upon ourselves to work not only harder, but smarter, and take advantage of our technology.

We are updating our long-range plan that covers 2007-2009 We must embrace the goals and objectives of this plan and make sure that each one of us understands his or her role and responsibility to accomplish the goals and objectives. We are measuring accomplishments on a quarterly basis and ask you, at your locations, to do the same measures.

Our mission:HEAD START of Greater Dallas provides children with thefoundation of skills and knowledge they need to be successfulin school and life and fosters self-reliant families and communities.

Our Vision:A strong community of healthy, self-reliant families actively engaged in giving children hope, direction and skills to succeed in school and life.

Let’s work on ensuring that both are accomplished throughout our agency.

Sincerely,

Wanda J. Smith

Chief Executive Officer

/ Welcome to the 2009 Spring Break Training Conference

To HSGD Staff:

Welcome to our 2009 Spring Break Training Conference. I hope that these three days prove to be an exciting, informative, and motivational experience for you.

This training opportunity is provided to all of us to help us excel in mastering the latest and greatest concepts and skills needed to provide the services that we offer to our children, their families, and each other. This is essential for us. We have been challenged by the new Improving Head Start for School Readiness Act and President Obama to prove that we are worth the tax dollars that are invested in Head Start.

We have an agency that is rich in talented staff, a community loaded with resources, and a history of excellence. Our goal is to be THE model of child and family care. Our goal must be reflected from every classroom and office in our agency. If excellence exists in only 183 of our 184 classrooms; that is not enough. If only 59 of our 60 Family Advocates can prepare a dynamic family action plan; that is not enough. We have all that it takes to get the 184 classrooms and the 60th Family Advocate.

I ask each of you, “Take it to next level. Go the extra mile.” We cannot reach and maintain excellence with a “that’s good enough” attitude. Tune into the sessions available to you during this conference. Find out how to get to the next level. Ask challenging questions.

I look forward to sharing these three days with you.

Sincerely,

Kenneth Gilbert,

Head Start Director
