The mission of Gordon A. Bailey Middle School is to educate all students so that they may achieve their maximum intellectual potential. This will allow them to become productive citizens in an expanding global, technological society. LATE WORK

Teachers will accept and award at least partial credit for late work turned in.

  1. Assignment turned in 1-3 days late. Highest grade a student can receive on an assignment is a 70.
  2. Assignment turned in after 4 days - an alternate assignment will be given and highest grade a student can receive on that assignment is a 70.

REDO ASSIGNMENT

A student who earns a failing grade on an assignment or examination, will be given an opportunity with 5 school days to redo the assignment/examination in order to earn up to the grade associated with minimally passing (70). Six Weeks Exams/Culminating Activity will not be available for retakes.

PROGRESS REPORTS

DistrictProgressreportsaremailedtoparents throughthedistrictofficeafterthethirdweek ofeachsixweeks gradingperiod.Districtprogress reports have codes thatindicatepositiveprogressinadditiontoareas ofconcern.Teachersareonlyrequired tosendDistrict progress reports forstudents who arenot passingthe1stthreeweeks ofeachgrading period.

Reportcardsaremailedtothestudent's homeat the endofeachsixweeksgradingperiod.

PROMOTION, RETENTION, AND PLACEMENT GRADES 6-8

Students are promotedfrom onegrade tothe nexton thebasisofacademicachievementand attendance. Amiddleschoolstudentmustpass atleast3coresubjects(English,Math,History,Science) and have an overall average ofat least70inALLsubjectsinordertobepromoted tothenextgradelevel.

STUDENT RECORDS

Studentschool records areconfidentialand protectedfromunauthorizedinspectionoruse. Acumulativerecordismaintainedforeach studentfromthetimethestudententersAISD untilthestudentwithdrawsorgraduates.This recordmoves withthe student fromschool to school. Bylaw,bothparents,whethermarried, separated,ordivorcedhave accesstothe records of astudentwhoisunder 18. Aparent/guardian,whoserightshavebeen legally terminated,willbedeniedaccesstotherecords whentheschoolisprovidedacopyofthelatest courtactionterminatingtheserights.Discipline documentation(s) are of record for3 years (NCLBAct).

HIGH SCHOOL COURSES

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

  • TheStateofTexasrequiresallstudentsto take physicaleducationunlesstheyhave submitteda Districtphysicaleducation waiverform.
  • Bailey's physicaleducation T-shirts and shortsare required and availablefor purchase. Parentswill need to provide appropriate tennis shoesand socks. Studentsinvolvedindancewillberequired toweara specialuniform. Thephysical education teacherswillprovidefurther information.
  • Ifastudentistobeexcusedfromphysical education because ofillnessorinjury, he/shemustbringawrittenrequestfrom theparent/guardian orphysician.
  • Thephysical educationdepartmentwill provideyouwithinformationregardingathletics.
  • StudentswhoareunabletoparticipateinP.E.foran extendedperiodmusthave doctor's notestatingthis.Thosestudents willbegivenan alternateassignment.

ATTENDANCE

ATTENDANCE GUIDELINES

Ifastudentislatemorethan50%oftheclassperiod,thestudent iscountedabsentforthat period. Toreceivecreditinacourse, astudent must be in attendance for at least 90% of the time the course is offered.

Per Texas Education Code 25.092, “Any grade level from Kindergarten through grade 12 may not be given credit or final grade for a class unless the student is in attendance for at least 90% of the days the class is offered”.

Students may earn credit for the class or final grade by completing a plan approved by the Principal. See attendance appeal process below.

Whenreturningtoschoolafter an absence. itisimperativethatyoubringanotetothe frontofficeand placeit in the attendancenotebasket.

Tardyto School:

You aretardyifyouarenot seated,inyourclassroom,whenthebellbegins to ring. Tardies to class arenotedby each teacherin theelectronicattendancesystem.

CLOSED CAMPUS

Any studentleavingcampus withoutpermission iscounted truantandsubjecttodisciplinary action. Studentsmaynotleavethecampus forlunch.

CAMPUSINFORMATION & EXPECTATIONS

ASSEMBLIES

Astudent's conductinassembliesmustmeet thesamestandardasintheclassroom. A studentwhoistardyorwhodoesnotabideby schoolanddistrictrulesofconductduring an assembly shall besubjectto disciplinary action. Studentsareexpectedto attend assembliesandsitwiththeirclassin the designatedarea.

CAFETERIA

  • Becourteous.
  • Cafeteriaopensinthemorningat7:55am and remains openuntil 8:20am for breakfast.
  • Allfooditemsmustremaininthecafeteria
  • Students andparents may bring lunch to schoolfortheirown students,however, becauseofnutritionallaws,fooditems maynot beshared, i.e.pizza, fast food items, cupcakes, etc. withother students.
  • Cleanyoureatingareawhen youare finished.Ifanadultasksyouto help cleanoff an area please donot argue with them.If you know who the mess belongs to, please help us by identifying the student.
  • Follow therequestsofall lunch supervisors.
  • Whenyouare finishedeatingyoumayplay basketball,orfoursquareoutside.Ballsare availableintheoffice15minutesintoevery lunchperiod.YoumusthaveyourIDtocheckoutaball.

NATIONAL SCHOOL LUNCH PROGRAM

AISDparticipatesin the NationalSchool Lunch Program and offers freeandreduced­ price mealsbasedonstudent'sfinancial needs. Informationaboutthisprogramcan be obtainedfromtheoffice.Applicationsaresent home with everystudent atthe beginning of eachschoolyear. You can also apply online on the AISD website.

CRISIS DISMISSAL

Intheeventofacrisis,tableswillbesetupin the main hall. PresentyourID andastaff memberwillretrieveyourstudent.Incaseof severe weather,remember,you may place yourselfandyourchildin greaterdangerby comingtotheschoolandexposingyourselfto theelements

The district allowsmiddleschool studentsto possesscellphones,asdefinedbylaw,while onschool propertyorwhileattendingschool­ sponsoredorschoolrelatedactivitiesonoroff schoolproperty."Paging device"includes a wireless,mobilecommunicationdeviceor portabletelephone. All cell phones MUST remain turned OFF and "out ofsight" during theschooldayonschoolproperty.

Violationof thisrulewillresultinthe confiscationofthedevicebystaff.

Parents willbenotifiedby theschooliftheelectronic device/cellphone isconfiscated. The school may hold confiscated cell phone or pagingdevicesfor48 hours. Ifapagingdevice/cell phoneisconfiscateda2nd timeaparent conference isrequired.Theitemwillbereleasedtotheparent whenthe$15fine ispaid(exactcashamountor check).Thefeecharged forthereleaseofthe deviceisallowed underSection37.082ofthe TexasEducationCode. HARASSMENT AND BULLYING POLICY

Bullyingwillnotbetolerated!

Sexualharassmentis a formof discrimination basedonsex. Itcanincludeavarietyof behaviors,butisgenerallydefinedasabusive, unwanted,or unwelcomeconduct of a sexual nature. This conduct may be verbal or physical, and can include requests for sexual favors or other intimidating sexual conduct. Sexual harassment is a violation of the law and is not tolerated.

LIBRARY SERVICES

Thelibraryisopenfrom8:00AMto4:00PM. Students are encouraged to usethe library. Booksmaybecheckedoutfortwoweeks. A replacementfeewillbechargedforlost,stolen, ordamagedbooks.

LOST AND FOUND

Students who findlostitemsare askedtotake themto theoffice. Studentswholosearticles shouldreportwhat items are missingto the office as soon as possible. Studentsareencouragedtolabelall belongings so they can be identified and returned tothe owner.At the end of each semester acharitableorganization willpickup anyunclaimeditems.

PUBLIC DISPLAYS OF AFFECTION

Publicdisplaysofaffectionarenotallowedon campus (i.e.handholding, hugging, kissing, etc.).

Anybehavior,notcontributingtothe educationalprocess, is prohibitedandcould resultindisciplinaryaction.

SCHOOL HOURS

School day begins at 8:25am, andends at 3:40pm. The buildingopensat7:55amand students are to report to their assigned morning meeting area. At the end of the day students are expected to leave the campus by 3:55pm. Students are only allowed to stay on campus if they are involved in an adult supervised activity (fine arts, clubs, tutoring, practice).

SCHOOL INSURANCE

Schoolinsuranceisavailabletoallstudents. A packetwillbeavailableforeachstudentonthe firstdayofclasses. Purchaseofthisprogramis optional. Onlystudentsplayinginthesports programmustprovidesignedevidence that they are covered by adequate insurance if they choose not to purchase this package.

SOLICITATION BY STUDENTS

Studentsarenotallowedtosellitems, i.e.candy, toys,games,etc.forself-profitortoearnmoney fororganizationsunlessithasbeenpreapproved by the principal.

Counselorsareassignedtoeachgradelevel. Theyareheretoassistyouandyourstudent. Additionally,theyoversee:

YourBaileyMiddleSchool StudentIDcard isimportant.YoumustwearyourIDcardtogetalibrary passbeforeschoolandtocheckoutbasketballs during lunch. IDcardsare required forentryintospecial events like schooldances,etc.

ThefirstIDcard willbeissuedfreeof charge. ReplacementIDsare$5.00andareavailable forpurchaseinthemainofficeduringlunches.

STUDENT LOCKERS

  • Lockersareissuedwithinthefirsttwo weeksofschool.Ifyou arehavinglockerproblems,goto the officeandfilloutaLockerRemedy Form.Itwillbe dealtwith asquicklyaspossible.
  • Backpacksandlargetotebagsmustbeinyourpersonallockerallday. Onlysmallpursesareallowed.
  • DONOTgive anyonethe combination to yourlock.Locksthatarelostor damagedmustbereplacedatthestudent's expense($10)atthetimeoftheloss.
  • Whenusedproperly,lockers areyour safestplaceforitemsyouhaveatschool. Highlyvaluableitems(includingmoney) andthose ofsentimentalvalueshould remainathome astheschoolisnot responsibleforthelossortheftofsuch items.

TEXTBOOKS

Studentsareresponsibleforany textbooksissued tothem.Textbooksmustbe keptcovered,clean, andshouldbehandledcarefully.Please make sure your name,grade, andteacher'sname arewrittenonthebooklabel,in casethebookismisplaced. Damagedor losttextbooksmustbe replacedatthestudent's expenseatthetimeoftheloss.

UPDATING CONTACT INFORMATION

Studentsare required tosubmittotheoffice anychanges of address or telephone numbers. Proof of address such as an electric bill, must be presented in order to make an address change.All parents/guardians should provide a telephonenumberwheretheymaybereached duringtheschool dayincaseofillnessor emergency.

VISITORS ON CAMPUS

  • Parents/Guardians are welcome and encouragedtovisitschool.
  • Pleasestopbytheoffice,state thereason for your visit, and present your driver’s license to the office personnel. You will be given a visitors badge to wear.
  • IfaParent/Guardian wishes tovisitaclassroom,they mustschedule an appointment with the teacher in advance.
  • Wearealwayspleasedtohave Parents/Guardiansjoinstudentsatlunch.
  • Nostudentsfromotherschoolsareallowed tovisit,gotoclasses,or shadowanother student.

EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

EXTRA-CURRICULAR

AllBaileystudentsareencouragedtoparticipate inaclubororganizationthatappealstotheir individualinterest. Oneofthemostimportant characteristicsformiddle schoolstudentsisthe "feelingofbelonging".Participationinaschool sponsoredclubororganizationisoneofthebest waystofosterfeelingsofsuccessand loyalty toyourschool. Studentclubsand performinggroups mayestablish rulesof conductstricterthanthoseforstudentsin general. If aviolationisalsoaviolationof schoolrules,theconsequencesspecifiedbythe school shall applyinadditionto any consequences specifiedbytheorganization.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

Allextracurricularactivitiesmustfollow requirementsassetforthbyTexasSenateBill1. In order to participateinextracurricular activitiesduringthefirstsixweeks,thestudent musthavebeenpromotedtothe nextgrade level. To remaineligible,astudentmust maintainapassinggradeinallsubjects.This includesallparticipatingathletes,cheerleaders, managers,bandperformers,clubmembers,etc. Acomplete set ofguidelinesincluding information onregainingeligibilityisonfile intheschooloffice.

CONCLUSION OF ACTIVITIES

Students are tobe picked upwithin 15 minutesofagivenactivityendingtime. We areconcernedabouteachchild's safety. Our teachers sponsormanyoftheseafterschool activitiesanditcreatesahardshipforthose sponsorswho mustwaitwiththestudentswhenyouarelate. Ifa parentor guardianfailstopick upthe studentwithin15minutesaftertheactivity has ended,the studentmaynotbeabletoparticipateinfuture events or activities.

ATHLETICS PARTICIPATION

Only 7thand 8thgraders are permittedto participateinAISDathletics.Beforeastudentis permitted toattendpractices, his/her parents/guardianmustread,sign,andreturna variety offorms which includea physical, insurance waiver, and permissionfor participation.Students whohavereachedtheir14th birthday before September 1st ofthepresentschoolyearareineligibletoparticipate on7th gradeteams.Students whohavereached their15th birthdaybeforeSeptember 1stofthe presentschoolyearareineligible toparticipate on8thgradeteams. Participation in athleticsisaprivilege. Studentswhocannotmeetbehavioral requirements ofthe athleticsclasses and activitiesmayberemoved.

NURSE

IMMUNIZATIONS AND HEALTH SCREENINGS

Allstudentsmustbeimmunizedagainstcertain diseasesor must present a certificate or statementthat,formedicalorreligiousreasons, the studentshouldnotbe immunized. The immunizationsrequiredare: diphtheria/tetanus, polio,measles, mumps,andrubella;theschool nursecanprovideinformationontherequired dosesofthesevaccines. Proofofimmunization maybepersonalrecordsbyalicensedphysician orpublichealthclinicwithasignatureorrubber stampvalidation.Ifastudentshouldnotbe immunizedformedicalreasons,thestudentor parent/guardianmustpresentacertificatesigned byaU.S.licensedphysicianthatstatesthat,in thedoctor'sopinion,theimmunizationrequired wouldbeharmfultothehealthandwellbeingof the student or anymemberof thestudent's familyorhousehold. Thiscertificatemustbe renewedyearly. Ifastudent'sreligiousbeliefs conflictwiththerequirementthatthestudent beimmunized, thestudentmustpresenta statementsignedbytheparentthatstatesthat theimmunizationconflictswiththebeliefsand practicesofarecognizedchurchorreligious denomination of whichthestudentisa member. Thisstatement mustberenewed yearly.Studentswhoarenotcurrentwill be senthomeand mayreturnwhen they have proof ofimmunization orhaveproofofan appointmentfortheimmunization.

  • AcanthosisNigricans-thisscreeningmay revealhyper-pigmentation at thebackof theneckwhichcanbeapre-signalofthe development of DiabetesTypeII.

MEDICATION

If itbecomes necessaryforanystudenttotake any type of medicationat school, a MedicationAuthorizationFormmustbe completedbytheparent. Themedication mustbeintheoriginalcontainerandmustbe labeledwiththestudent's nameandthename ofthemedication.Allmedicationwillbekept anddispensed throughthenurse'soffice. Studentsmaynotcarry,store or disperse medications. Students who possess and disperseOTC(over-the-counter) medications,aswellasprescription medication,and thosewhosolicitthemedication will be subject to disciplinary action and may besent totheAlternativeLearningCenter(ALC), and/or reported to the police.

PROTOCAL FOR HANDLING CONCERNS

ACADEMIC CONCERNS:

  • Parentsshould firstdiscusstheir concern with the classroomteacher.
  • If aparentbrings a concerntothe AssistantPrincipalwithoutfirstconsultingwiththe teacher, the Assistant Principalwillasktheparent tofirstconfer with the classroomteacher.
  • If theteacherandtheparents/guardiansare unableto resolvetheconcern,the grade level AssistantPrincipal, and then the Principal shouldbecontacted.
  • Ifafterdiscussingthe concernwiththe Principal if the concern isnotresolved, then contact the AreaSuperintendent.

DISCIPLINARY CONCERNS:

  • Parents/guardiansshould firstdiscusstheir concern with the appropriate grade level Assistant Principal.
  • If theparents/guardiansand grade level AssistantPrincipalare unableto resolvetheconcern, the Principal shouldbecontacted.
  • Afterdiscussingthe concernwiththe Principal if the concern isnotresolved, then contact the AreaSuperintendent.

PURSES AND BACKPACKS

Studentpursesandbackpacksbroughttoschool are subject to reasonablesearch by a school official (teacher, principal, assistantprincipal) whenheorshehasestablishedreasonable cause tobelievethestudentisviolatingorhasviolated a student code of conduct rule, school rule or the law. New Jersey v.T.L.L.469U.S. 325 (1985); Coffman v. State, 782 S.W2d 249(Tex.App.-Houston[14Dist.]1989). Parentsshouldremindstudentsnottobring itemsto schoolthatare·inviolationofthestudentcode of conduct(guns,knives,weapons,drugs,etc.). Backpacksmustremaininlockersduring the schoolday.

Lockersbelongtotheschool,andwithreasonable, causecanbesearchedby administration. (Shumaker vsState ofTexas 1998)

ZERO TOLERANCE

On November8,1993, theBoardofTrusteesapprovedapolicy,whichstatesthattheschool district will nottolerate the possessionof firearms, otherillegal weapons,or assaulton districtemployees. Thepolicycoversstudents ingrades4through12andprovidesthat: A disciplinaryhearing(orARD/504meeting)shall beheldinaccordancewiththeprovisionsofthe StudentDisciplinepolicyforstudentsaccusedof possessingfirearms.After dueprocessand determinationofguilt,regular education students shallbeexpelledforaminimumofsixweeks. A removalor expulsionhearing(orARD/504 meeting)shallbeheldin accordancewiththe provisionsoftheStudentDisciplinepolicyfor students' accused of possessing other illegal weaponsor any form of assault on aschool employee.Regulareducationstudentsfoundtohavecommittedsuchoffensesshall beremoved toanalternativeeducation placementorexpelledforaminimumofsix weeks.Expulsions andremovalsinthese instancesshallnotbeprobated. Principals shallreportallsuchincidentstotheappropriate Districtandlawenforcement personnel.

DRUG AND ALCOHOL USE

Any student, who intentionallysells, gives,possesses,uses,or is underthe influenceof illegal drugs, narcotics,or alcoholin or on school property, including buses, shall be subjectto(1)removalfromschool and(2) beingreported to the appropriate law enforcementagenciesforpossiblelegalaction. Allprescriptionsand non-prescription(over the counter)medicationsmustbe kept andadministeredintheNurse's office.Students maynotcarryorstoremedications.

SMOKING

Theuseand/orpossession oftobaccoproducts andparaphernalia (lighters,matches,papers, etc.)areprohibited. Any studentwhoviolates thisruleissubjecttoremovalfromschool.

Therulesapplyatthebusstop,onthebus,on theschoolcampus,andAlSDpropertyduring theschool day andatany schoolactivity beforeor afterschool.
