Welcome to 6th Grade!
To help achieve the Gateway vision, we will be implementing the following guidelines and procedures. Teachers have reviewed these guidelines and procedures on the first day of school. Students, please review these procedures with your parents. We look forward to an outstanding year! Go Gateway Gators!

Entering the Classroom

  • All students should enter the room quietly and be in their seats by the time the tardy bell rings.
  • Immediately get ALL of your materials out for that class (i.e., homework, pencils sharpened, etc.).
  • Immediately begin your bell activity, and write in your agenda any homework/learning targets or upcoming test/project you may have.

Dismissal

  • Remember“The bell does not dismiss you, the teacher does.”
  • No one will be dismissed until everyone is at their desks, standing quietly behind a pushed in chair, and the room is in order!

Class Instruction Time

  • Please refrain from speaking when others are speaking and when the teacher is teaching. It is distracting for other students and the teacher.
  • If you have a question or would like to answer a question,raise your hand and wait to be called on.
  • Remember to limit your questions to the class discussiononly.
  • Do not ask to go to the restroom or get a drinkduring class discussions or lessons. A transparent, closed water bottle with water only is okay to have at the desk.
  • Students are able to use the restroom during breaks, lunches, specials, or with teacher permission.

Absences

  • It is your responsibility to find out what you missed when you have been absent.
  • Do not ask about missed work in the middle of a lesson.
  • You have one day for every day that you were absent to make-up the work.
  • Make sure you turn in any work that was due the day you were absent on the first day that you return to class.

Turning in Assignments/Homework

  • The teacher will always inform students about due dates. Anything that is not due in class will be written in the agenda.
  • It is your responsibility to turn in your work on time in the turn-in bins.
  • The appropriate heading should be on ALL assignments.

Assignment Heading

  • Write your name and information as clearly as possible. If the teacher cannot read it, he/she cannot grade it.
  • The following heading is required in the upper left-hand corner of all assignments:

FIRST AND LAST NAME (write out both)

CLASS TITLE/PERIOD

DATE

No-Name Papers

  • Papers that are turned in without a name and heading will be marked missing until they are turned in with a proper heading.
  • It is the student’s responsibility to identify any missing work and check the gradebook regularly in StudentVue.

Cooperative Learning (Working in Groups)

  • You may be asked to work in pairs or groups to complete an assignment.
  • When working in this manner, we expect each student to do his or her part on the assignment and to treat each other with respect and dignity..
  • Failure to cooperate with one another may result in a lower grade foryou at the teacher’s discretion.
  • You will NOT ALWAYS be in the same group each time. There will be times the teacher chooses the group, and other times when students are allowed to choose groups. Learning to work together is part of the learning process.

.Leaving the Classroom

  • You must havepermissionto leave the classroom for any reason!
  • You must sign-out/sign-in when leaving and coming back to the classroom.
  • Because our class time is valuable,you need to go to the restroom and/or get water between classes.

Food/Drinks/Candy

  • You are not allowed to have open drinks or food (water is an exceptionin a transparent bottle) in the classroom.
  • Exception: a medical reason (which requires a note).
  • NO GUMis allowed on campus or in any classroom.
  • Teachers reserve the right tothrow outany food or drinks as they see fit.

Cell Phones

  • Cell phones are expected to remain in the student’s backpack.
  • Cell phones are notallowed to be used on campus during school hours at any time. If a child disregards this rule, the cell phone will be confiscated and brought to the office for theparent to pick up after school.

Discipline Plan

We will follow the school-wideSNAP Procedures. If a student chooses not to follow the SNAP procedures, the following consequences will occur:

  1. Initial warning
  2. Red Card issued
  3. Visit to a buddy classroom
  4. Parent conference
  5. Referral to administration

Teachers reserve the right to skip any of the above steps depending on the severity of the behavior.

Class Craft

Students will be participating in a classroom incentive program called Class Craft. Class Craft is designed as a student incentive program to earn privileges, quarterly incentives as a grade level, and can lose points for inappropriate behaviors in the classroom. This is NOT Class Dojo. Parents will not receive e-mails or reports regarding behavior. If communication is required, the teacher will contact parents.

Grading Policy

A student’s total grade for any marking period is based on the total number of points a student received divided by the total number of points possible, which will result in a percentage grade. The following scale determines the letter grade associated with a student’s percentage grade.

A = 90% - 100%

B = 80% - 89%

C = 70% - 79%

D = 60% - 69%

F = 59% or below

Assessment Retakes:

  • If a student tests lower than a 70% on an assessment, he/she may request to retake the test by filling out a “Request to Retest Test”form. This must be done within one week after the assessment has been entered in the gradebook and requires a parent signature.
  • Tests will be retaken at the teacher’s discretion.
  • It is important that students do not rely on the ability to retake an assessment in order to pass their class. Good study habits, keeping up with assignments in class, asking for help as soon as a concept is unclear will result in positive student success.

Late Assignments

  • It is the student’s responsibility to be prepared for class. Assignments are expected to be turned in at thebeginning of each period on the specified due date. Studentswill notbe allowed to call home to have their parents or guardians drop off their assignments.
  • Late work will be accepted until the teacher’s quarterly grade book closes.

Absent Make-up Work

  • Students are responsible for checking on missed assignments the day they return to school.
  • Students have as many days as they were absent to make up the missing work.
  • If a student is absent the day a long term project is due, the student must turn in the project the day they return to school.

Extra Help

  • If a student is having difficulties with a subject, contact the teacher and arrange some time for extra help.

Parent Involvement

Sixth graders will be gaining the independence they need to be successful in school, but can always use a little help from home. Here are a few ways to support your student:

  • Check your child’s agenda nightly to ensure they are completing assignments.
  • Check your e-mail daily for important communication.
  • Check the online grade book frequently to know if your child has any missing assignments. (ParentVue)
  • Refer to Gateway Pointe Website “Teacher Pages” often.
  • Remove and read the flyers from school in the student’s backpack.
