Celebrating Our Classified Staff from March 13th – 17th

From para-educators, to bus drivers, to custodians, and so many more, our classified staff are such a vital part of our school and district. They are frequently the first and last person our students see as they enter and leave school. They offer many talents and are so dedicated to the safety and success of our students. Join us in thanking them for all their services and dedication whether it is sending a note of thanks or through a different creative way.

LOVE & LOGIC TIP

What do parents do when their children become truthfulness-challenged? If many adults in today’s world suffer from Honesty Deficit Disorder, who are we to think that our offspring will always be immune? The good news is that conscientious parents can turn the tide on truth-bending behavior by applying the Three E’s of Love and Logic.

Obviously, parents who act truthfully around their kids are far more likely to have kids who tell the truth. A not-so-obvious application of good modeling involves discussing our moral dilemmas with other adults when our children are within earshot. When our children overhear us talkingabout temptations…and how we’ve chosen truthfulness instead of deceit…powerful lessons get locked in. Those who understand the love and Logic approach, understand that consequences proceeded with empathy are far more effective than consequences delivered with anger, guilt, or sarcasm. An added benefit of responding to our children’s mistakes with empathy is that they’ll be far more likely to admit making them. Do you want them to hide their mistakes rather than bringing them to your attention? Of course you don’t! That’s why it’s so important to discipline with love rather than lectures.

from the office

Our playground monitors have noticed that periodically there are parent volunteers on the playground at recess taking pictures. Although this may seem innocent enough and fun to have a photo of your child at recess, it is against our policy to take pictures of students without pre-authorization. This is in place for security reasons. There are students who cannot have their photo in any publication or on social media. Thank you for your understanding.

LIBRARY LINK

The kindergarten-second grade students will be celebrating Dr. Seuss's birthday onMarch 2ndwith a party in the library. We have spent the month of February reading many of his books and learning about his life, and what lead him to become an author/illustrator!

Also, thank you for your support at home in helping your children return or renew their books each week so they can continue to check out new books. :)

March is Music in our Schools Month. Why Study Music? Music is Science, Math, Physical Education, Foreign Language, and History. One of my favorite facts: 66 % of music majors are admitted to medical school and only 44% of biochemistry majors are admitted. (From Bulletin Boards for the Music Classroom)

Fifth grade students will enjoy a special concert at Benaroya hall on the 1st of March. They will hear music from Beethoven, Dvorak, Britten and Stravinsky – along with some contemporary music written just for this event. As always, I’d like to thank our wonderful PTA for their support of this great event.

Students at most every grade level have been studying all aspects of melody. As we look to the last trimester, students will be exploring the expressive elements of music. These include dynamics (louds & softs), tempo (fast & slow) and articulation (how each note is played.) In addition, we will explore timbres of different instruments and learn about instrument families – string, woodwind, brass, percussion & keyboards.

Students will now be able to purchase an 8oz. bottle of water during lunch for $.50.
