Justification for the Follett Order

I had several reasons for ordering these items from Follett. While going through the 300s section of the elementary school library, I noticed that the materials were rather outdated especially the fairy tales. Several of the teachers at the kindergarten and first grade levels have expressed concerns about the new standards for Social Studies. They need materials to support the Georgia Professional Standards for their grade levels. The standards for Kindergarten involve identifying the purpose of holidays and the people that celebrate them (SSKH1). The students have to understand terms used to relate time and explain how things change over time (SSKH3). These teachers want videos to help students visualize “long ago”. The first grade teachers need videos and materials to supplement student reading on the theme of American folktales (SS1H2). The ones they are covering include John Henry, Johnny Appleseed, Davy Crockett, Paul Bunyan and Annie Oakley. The students have to describe the positive character traits demonstrated by folk heroes (SS1CG1). They are also covering the Underground Railroad and George Washington Carver and identifying similarities and differences between these figures and themselves (SS1H1). First grade teachers want to teach Social Studies and Reading with a theme approach. They need reading materials to support these standards.

For the Follett order I concentrated on mostly K-5 300s materials to meet these stated needs. Follett has excellent audiovisual materials so this was my priority while ordering from them. Classrooms are still mostly equipped for VHS, but some have DVD capabilities. The read alongs (stories and tapes) fit very well with students in a large group, smaller reading groups, and/or listening stations. Hardcover books were chosen for durability. The e-book will help teachers to use fairy tales and fantasy to teach thinking skills.

The $1,000.00 total takes into account the amount of total money I have available for these particular needs balanced with my total budget of $5,000.00 for the year. Additional funds will be available during the year when Book Fairs and other fundraising occur.
