HOW COULD I IMPROVE THE CLUB?

As a member of a family or a company or an athletic club you will sometimes be offended by something that your partner or boss or fellow club member or the “club” does or does not do - that’s just a fact of life!

We want to ensure that we are a happy and exciting athletic club and for this we need every member’s help.

How can YOU help to make this happen?

  1. ATTEND.

a.The club offers a weekly Time Trial on Tuesday evenings from 6pm. Try and attend this weekly (or at least a few times a month if possible). Run or jog or walk the 4km and stay for a quick drink or a FEW afterwards and get to know the other members and the “club”.

b.The club has a club tent at most races as indicated in the Newsletter. Come to the club tent before and after the race and relax a bit.

c.The club attends certain “team” events like the Jannas 18 hour and Germiston Take 5 Relays. Volunteer to run in one of the club’s teams.

d.The club arranges “club training runs” and social events like the year-end function and prize-giving. Attend and enjoy these.

e.Attend the club’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) in November every year. Here you can influence the decisions about the club for the next year.

  1. SPEAK UP.

a.If you have questions – ASK by contacting any member of the committee by email or phone or in person at the club on a Tuesday.

b.If you have suggestions – MAKE THEM.

c.If you have a complaint – SPEAK UP. Phone, email, come to the club and speak to someone on the committee about it. Attend the AGM and publically voice it. Get it in the openbecause otherwise it can’t be attended to.

  1. HELP.

a.The club organises 2 races every year. A 15km Road Race in March and a 15km Trail Race in August. The dates will be confirmed in the January Newsletter but please diarise these and volunteer to help with the marshalling, water points, entry tables, setting up the start and finish area etc.

b.If you have suggestions or complaints, HELP to implement the solutions.

  1. SWOP SHOES

No not literally!

a.Put yourself in another member’s shoes. If they’re new to the club, help to make them feel welcome by introducing yourself to them and introducing them to other members.

b.Offer information about races, club events, running groups, licensing procedures or introduce them to the people who can help them with that.

c.If you have a complaint remember that the committee volunteer their own time to help with club duties and that they are only human and not always perfect. Put yourself in their shoes and help them with a solution.

So let’s ALL make AAAC a happy and exciting club to belong to - TOGETHER!

Don't Mess With Us

We live in one of the most beautiful countries in the world... and as runners we are fortunate enough to explore many of these regions through races. So why do some people still litter! Join this awesome initiative!

A Message From Phobians Running Club
We Runners and Walkers are extremely fortunate in being able participate in a road race in one or both cities virtually every weekend of the year – surely a privilege unmatched anywhere else in the world.
But do we ever stop to consider the cost of this good fortune?
The inconvenience caused to motorists and the residents through whose areas we pass is one thing, but this is of a temporary nature and something our race organisers try to minimize.
Far more costly is the damage we cause, not only to our reputation, but more importantly, to our environment – the route we have taken, littered with discarded water sachets along its entire length, is never a pretty sight.
Why can’t we simply hold onto our empty sachets till the next water point, or find a bin to drop them into along the way?
Do we really need to throw them into the bushes or drains to further pollute our already threatened environment?
Do we ever spare a thought for the helpers, whose thankless, back-breaking task it is to try and clean up the mess afterwards, and how much easier it would be for them if we were to throw our sachets into the ample waste bins usually provided at the water points?
Also at the finish – is it really necessary to drop our coke cups and unwanted flyers where we stand, instead of just moving a few meters to the nearest bin?
We at Phobians have embarked on a campaign to ensure that all our members are personally made aware of this litter problem – and how easily it can be countered – in the hope that this message will be spread amongst all we encounter along the way.
We would like to encourage all ASA affiliated clubs to join our campaign by doing the same.
Please would you place notices on your Websites and in your newsletters requesting your members NOT to drop their empty sachets between water stations, and NOT to litter the venues.
We also call upon race organisers to ensure that the announcers repeatedly remind participants of these requests before the start of each race.
Let’s see if we really can make a difference, and make our sport even more rewarding!
