Letter from the teacher

We have new spelling words this week; we are starting Unit 2 of Superkids. There will also be a new “Word List” coming home. Remember that the “Word List” is the sheet that requires a parent signature on the bottom when the child is “ready” to read the words to me in class. I do notask the kids to read meevery word on the Word List sheet, instead I am listening for their “decoding skills”—can they figure out how to apply the letter sounds to read the words. Help your child break down the words by underlining the separate sounds. For example, bath helps them recognize that the word has 3 different sounds blended together.

Our first spelling quiz is done! The memory words for the next quiz will be “tricky” because they all start with “wh”. These words are the perfect example of words that students need to remember how to read and spell instead of trying to use letter-sounds they know. The words “when” and “which” are considered memory words but they are decodable—they are included on the list since they are words that commonly begin questions. Work on memorizing the words, not decoding.

Regarding “online homework”—XtraMath is required once a week. The Superkids site and Spelling City are just extra resources you have available to use, but HIGHLY recommended. Both sites are updated with the next set of words and Superkids Unit 2. There are books on the Superkids site that correlate perfectly to the phonics skills and words we are learning.

The kids will start checking out books from our classroom library. They should be reading the book nightly until they are reading the book fluently and with confidence. Once they are “ready,” they’ll bring the book back to school and take an online comprehension quiz called an “AR Quiz.” If your child finds the book too difficult or too boring, please have them bring the book back so they can get one they’ll enjoy!
